I haven't read through the previous 12+ pages of posts, but I think I can with confidence of being the first, submit as my favorite female vocalist Diamanda Galas who has really done but one rock record: The Sporting Life, with John Paul Jones in 1994 (her best work is avant-garde performance art). But with her 3 and a half octave range, she could easily have been an opera diva.

My favorite male vocalist is without a doubt Mike Patton. Patton's vocals touch on crooning, falsetto, screaming, opera, death growls, rapping, mouth music, beatboxing, and scatting, among other techniques. Critic Greg Prato of Allmusic writes, "Patton could very well be one of the most versatile and talented singers in rock music"; colleague Blake Butler called him "a complete and utter musical visionary and a mind-blowing and standard-warping genius." The most impressive recording I have heard him on, is John Zorn's "Six Litanies for Heliogabalus" from 2007.

Patton can do soooooooo much with his voice, it's unreal.

What other vocalists are you into? Always great to have new life on the forum.

Great choices. :tiphat:

Tim Buckley is seriously awesome, as is Freddie Mercury.
They might at any instant make my top 10, as some of your other selections (I can actually see them there with my mind's eye, ha ha).

What can I say about Elvis? He's timeless, of course, but not my cup of tea, although I do dig some of the songs

Anyhow, my top 10 changes nearly every day, and I think maybe it's time I stopped bothering with this list-making thing altogether.

Freddie, I have to ask you then, what material have you heard from T. Buckley and Mercury?

Funny but I'm listening to Tim Buckley right now and getting my head blown. He's astonishing, especially live. I haven't listened to his studio albums yet but I soon will.
I've heard nearly all the albums by Queen and seen some live concerts on dvd (Montreal 1981 is one of my faves).

Yeah for Tim, you need Dream Letter: Live In London.

I agree he's among the elite for live vocalists too. Gives Perry a serious run for his money.

Wait a minute, that's what I was listening to.
It has a medley of Pleasant Street and You Keep Me Hanging On, right? Well, I was listening to that, and when he moved on to the latter song I was stunned. It was really amazing.
