And this. I mean, I love them too, but they just didn't make enough records. Two albums shouldn't make a hall of famer, even if they're two great albums.

The Sex Pistols have one (great) album.

I know. I don't think they belong in the Hall.

I don't think that's correct. I think those who made their debut in 1989 will become eligible next year.

It'll be the induction class of 2014. 2014 - 25 = 1989.

Mine were Link Wray, LL Cool J, Deep Purple, Chic, and Hall & Oates. I felt Nirvana was such a lock they didn't need my extra vote on an ephemeral ballot.

I voted Chic, Purple, LL Cool J, Nirvana and N.W.A.

Nirvana's first release was from 1988 and they are first eligible this year. I think you are eligible AFTER 25 years have passed since your first release, not in the 25th year.

Yes, that probably makes more sense.

Since the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and Dylan all debuted in '62 and were inducted in '88, I'd say you are correct.

BTW, here's where the new members of the Hall whom we inducted ended up in our rankings of the Hall members plus our choices for the Hall:

58 - Nirvana
115 - Deep Purple
150 - LL Cool J
156 - Hall & Oates
167 - Yes
180 - Kiss
192 - Chic
232 - Link Wray
251 - Linda Ronstadt
295 - Peter Gabriel

Note that means that 6 of the 16 nominees didn't make our Hall--which is pretty sad given how many acts we voted for. I think there were a lot of names on our listing more deserving than the remaining ones on ours. (NWA is a really tough case--to me it depends on whether you're considering only what they did under that name, or the careers of the members. The others we didn't vote in I would definitely replace on the ballot with others we did.)

I think you mean "this year's nominees" rather than "new members," but it's interesting to see what we collectively thought of these acts. You missed NWA who I inserted. It looks like we saw everybody up to Chic as solid candidates and the rest as borderline. That seems about right.

Here's the current nominees that we did not induct:

The Replacements
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
The Meters
Cat Stevens
The Zombies

I still don't see any of these as belonging.

I'm surprised The Replacements have been nominated. Have Sonic Youth been nominated yet?

Ah, yeah, I think I searched the text but didn't account for there being periods there!

Questlove is on the nominating committee now. He nominated Hall & Oates. Hopefully this means we will be seeing Kool & the Gang and the Commodores on the ballot in the near future.

Oh rockists, you never learn, do you?

Anyone care to post Sampson's spiel about rap being a form of rock? I don't feel like arguing with graying Zeppelin fans today.

In addition to the points that we've been making for years about hip hop and other things being part of rock, in this case there's the additional point that the Hall has already admitted hip hop and disco artists, which would make it nonsensical at this point to say that additional artists from those subgenres are ineligible.

So Laura Nyro isn't among this guy's 15 nominees to boot from the Hall, but Madonna is? Well, at least in his poll, he gives you the opportunity to vote for "other".
