Keep Cat Stevens Out of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Vote for KISS. Vote for Chic if you have to. But keep that radical dingbat out of Cleveland.

Pretty scummy of that author to put in that link line about how Yusef supported killing Rushdie in no uncertain terms, blah blah, and the link turns out to go to an Amazon page for a book. FWIW, Yusef later claimed to have been joking and said:

Yusef Islam wrote:
I never called for the death of Salman Rushdie; nor backed the Fatwa issued by the Ayatollah Khomeini--and still don’t. The book itself destroyed the harmony between peoples and created an unnecessary international crisis.

When asked about my opinion regarding blasphemy, I could not tell a lie and confirmed that--like both the Torah and the Gospel--the Qur’an considers it, without repentance, as a capital offense. The Bible is full of similar harsh laws if you’re looking for them.[8] However, the application of such Biblical and Qur’anic injunctions is not to be outside of due process of law, in a place or land where such law is accepted and applied by the society as a whole... [9]

Tough call whether I'd ever want to keep someone who I think is qualified for the Hall out because of his actions. For example--if Michael Jackson had been convicted of the accusations against him, would I have not wanted him in the Hall? I don't know. In this case, I think Stevens is a pretty questionable candidate anyway, so it's kind of moot.

BTW, T-C, on the front page of this thread you list Harry Belafonte and Bette Midler as "actors". While neither is really a rock and roller, they are both I think more known as singers than as actors, especially Belafonte.

They won't induct them because they were short-lived, non-original members. That's why I did not list them. I was being realistic.

Gene has never done drugs and has never even been drunk in his entire life.

Simmons' statement isn't literally true either.

I would support the inclusion of anyone in the Hall if their contributions to rock merited it, regardless of how bad a person he is or was. I would would definitely not vote for Stevens, because I think most of the artists on the ballot are more deserving. It would have to be a pretty weak ballot for Stevens to be one of the 5 or 6 most deserving artists listed. But I strongly disagree with this writer's reasons for keeping Stevens out. He also finds fault with Chic and Yes being on the ballot, so it's a pretty weak article all around.

My lord, what a moron. His thesis is that the problem with the Hall is that it doesn't give a fair shake to softer, poppier artists. Now, there's SOME truth to this, particularly the "poppier" part. But not so much the soft part--Laura Nyro and Randy Newman don't exactly bring the heavy metal thunder. And even with the poppier part--or the "less critically acclaimed" part, which is what he MEANS although he can't fit it into words--this year's ballot includes people like Hall & Oates, Cat Stevens, and (as he mentions) Kiss, who seem to be exactly the kinds of artists he's looking for, so what's he complaining about? Maybe if he gave more examples, and they weren't artists like Bread and Toto who really don't belong in the Hall.

my point is only for the sake of interest in the history of the band ...

Joe Lynn Turner (1989 - 1992; vocals)
Don Airey (2002 - present; keyboards)

.. additionally Bolin, Turner and Airey are part of their album recording history as well ....... and the addition of Satriani to the list merely shows the exceptional guitarists / musicians to have been part of the band during its lifetime ....Take care

Holy cow, Yes is finally on the ballot! With the induction of Rush and their spot at the top of the fan ballot, it appears the barrier to progressive rock has finally crumbled to pieces.

Peter Gabriel is the only nominee this year who is already an inductee. He gets to vote for himself. Who else do you think Peter Gabriel will vote for? Peter Gabriel's ballot:

01. Peter Gabriel
02. Yes
03. Deep Purple
04. Kiss or the Zombies
05. Cat Stevens or Linda Ronstadt

Email I sent to Greg Harris and Robert Hilburn:

Since you nominated 16 acts this year, I think you should induct half (8). That would be fair.

Response from Robert Hilburn:

No, they shouldn't even induct seven.. they should limit it to five to make it more competitive and more respectable... seven or 8 is watering it down
