Since you nominated 16 acts this year, I think you should induct half (8). That would be fair.

Response from Robert Hilburn:

No, they shouldn't even induct seven.. they should limit it to five to make it more competitive and more respectable... seven or 8 is watering it down

There should not be a set number of inductees at all. Each voter should vote yes or no on each nominee and they should need a certain percentage of the votes to get in, like the baseball hall of fame.

additions for Deep Purple ... Take care

Tommy Bolin (1975 - 1976; lead guitar, vocals)
Joe Satriani (1993 - 1994; lead guitar)

They won't induct them because they were short-lived, non-original members. That's why I did not list them. I was being realistic.

my point is only for the sake of interest in the history of the band ...

Joe Lynn Turner (1989 - 1992; vocals)
Don Airey (2002 - present; keyboards)

.. additionally Bolin, Turner and Airey are part of their album recording history as well ....... and the addition of Satriani to the list merely shows the exceptional guitarists / musicians to have been part of the band during its lifetime ....Take care

I would think they would include Bolin. He's tremendously respected, his own recordings are notable (but not notable enough to give him a realistic chance of getting in on his own), he was in the group when it was still in its prime, and he died young. Satriani only has two of the four. Turner maybe; I don't think anyone who joined as late in the game as Airey has a chance.

You misspelled "Whitest" and "Blackest". Hope this helps.

Link Wray, The Replacements and most of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band are white! They are all on the Worst Case Scenario list. It has nothing to do with race. It has to do with popularity compared to who else is on the list!!! The Spinners, Kool and the Gang and the Commodores would be on all my Best Case Scenario lists, just as Yes, Deep Purple and Kiss are!! Chic is on all three lists: Best, Worst and Middle of the Road.

Don`t disagree with any of that and do agree and hope room would be made for Bolin, he was an exceptional and influential guitarist from his early days with Lonnie Mack to his work with Zephyr, Energy, the James Gang, Billy Cobham, Dr John, Alphonse Mouzon, his own solo career ... to lead guitarist with Purple, further expanding on the R&B/jazz, funk, soul flavours found on the 2 previous Purple albums with his effort "Come Taste the Band"... their are many who would argue he might be one of the greatest rock guitarists in the US since Hendrix .... but Airey is an interesting subject having been with the band since 2002 and recorded 3 studio albums with Purple, notably, for trivia, the most recent hit #1 in a number of countries around the world, Top 10 in over 25 countries and charted in an additional 91 countries from Top 20 to Top 100 .... Take care

There were no other nominees with black members.

I mean, look, I don't think you did this purposely, but the fact that every single black nominee was on your worst-case list shows that you're going largely by your personal taste (and it shows that your personal taste is pretty white, but there's nothing wrong with that). What makes LL Cool J a "worst-case" other than that you don't like his music? I think by any objective criteria he's among the more deserving nominees this year. I think his case above, say, Peter Gabriel is pretty overwhelming, actually.

Agreed. What percentage?

Indeed. If Yes gets in on their first ballot, the nominating committee will have some serious egg on its face.

Well, baseball is 75%, but that's not as much of a personal opinion as music is. I'd want to see the past results of elections before I came up with the proper percentage. Maybe here it should be 2/3 of the vote.

A few problems with that though... the more names on a ballot, the less chance that anybody gets in. On one hand that might be good, it'd keep the Hall restricted to just the absolutely elite, but on the other hand if there's a total of six new members a decade or something then the public will lose interest and the Hall will lose all relevancy.

What I'd rather see is more nominees each year without raising the number of inductees. As it stands now (not counting this year) there's only 28 names who made a ballot without eventually getting in. That's just one per year. So in other words, if you're nominated, you're essentially in at some point, which gives WAYYYYYYY too much power to the Nominating Committee. Instead, if you nominated 15-18 new names a year, limited new inductees to a maximum of five on each ballot, and prevented any nominee who failed to get at least 35% of the vote from reappearing the next year (and anyone under 25% were similarly prevented from being re-nominated for three years, etc.), then you'd guarantee a much deeper array of names getting nominated, even though most wouldn't have much chance to get in because you're not raising the inductees. The public would become more interested because of the greater number of artists at least being considered, AND it'd be more of an honor just being nominated than it is now, when failure to get in is thought to be an insult.

That, to me, makes the most sense.

Not if each voter is allowed to vote for as many candidates as they want to.
