That is totally subjective.

What we need is a more objective way to messure each criteria and establish parameters.

For example, for each category The Beatles and Elvis are at the very top. They are #1 and #2 in terms of popularity, influence, musical impact and cultural impact. So the parameter should be them. I mean for example, if The Beatles and Elvis are #1 in cultural impact they should get 5 points. The Rolling Stones have huge impact but they are not at the level of The Beatles or Elvis so they get 4 points.

Taking one's conclusions and translating them into numbers does not make them more objective.

I am not saying that we should take my conclusions or anybody's conclusions on particular.

I think that with a point system is more easy to reach a consensus between all the participants of this forum.

For example, without a point system is really hard to decide whom is greater between The Who and Led Zeppelin, but with a point system....

The Who
Popularity: 5 points
Influence: 3 points
Musical Impact: 5 points
Cultural Impact: 3 points

Total Score in points 16 points.
Final Score (%): 80%

Led Zeppelin:
Popularity: 5 points
Influence: 2 point
Musical Impact: 5 points
Cultural Impact: 2 points

Total Score in points 14 points.
Final Score (%): 70%

Or it could come out like this:

The Who
Popularity: 4 points
Influence: 4 points
Musical Impact: 4 points
Cultural Impact: 2 points

Total Score in points 14 points.
Final Score (%): 70%

Led Zeppelin:
Popularity: 5 points
Influence: 4 point
Musical Impact: 3 points
Cultural Impact: 2 points

Total Score in points 14 points.
Final Score (%): 70%

Maybe if we did it on a 10 point scale, we wouldn't run into a draw. Besides that, I think the number scale might be a better way of evaluating artists than what we've been doing. At the very least, its a good way to present an argument.

If other people want to present their arguments in that way, that's fine, but for me it would be hard to translate performance in criteria into numbers.

I got a chuckle out of that, too, but then I realized that I've never heard any of the supposedly hundreds of covers of "Yesterday".

That's actually what I do with my lists. I use a 10-point scale.

yeah this is true for me too. its one of those things that gets said a lot so the reference was funny to me, but i've never heard any cover of it. there are apparently versions from Marvin Gaye, Sinatra, Boys II Men, etc etc but usually it seems its just used as album filler.

Definitely NOT album filler in the case of Marvin. His version is phenomenal.

There are quite a few artists that are close. What I'm thinking now is that I'll add Kanye, The Dominoes, Johnny Otis, Joe Turner, Whitney, and Guns 'n' Roses and drop The Sex Pistols, The Velvet Underground, Talking Heads, Frank Zappa, Chicago, and Yes.

Woah, Johnny Otis? He's not even in the Hall of Fame as a performer. And doesn't Joe Turner have one notable rock 'n' roll song?

I don't know about the others, but according to Wikipedia "Flip, Flop and Fly" is jump blues and "Corrina, Corrina" is blues.

Elvis famously did a live medley of "Shake" and "Flip" on an early TV appearance.

Elvis covered "Blue Moon of Kentucky", too, but that doesn't make Bill Monroe a rock artist.

Still haven't listened to it, but the Wikipedia page for "Corrine, Corrina" actually doesn't mention the Big Joe Turner version at all. Apparently it's not one of the more notable recordings of it. Says a lot about the Bob Wills version, though.
