Well, Stevie Wonder is one musical genius. The Who is three musical geniuses plus a helluva singer.

Not Stevie's fault that he can do all four jobs at once.

I think so. I'll stack The Who's body of work and contributions to the development of rock 'n' roll up against Stevie's anyday.

Just curious, which artists you have no problems being ahead of the Who, Clash?

Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones.

And, yeah, I can understand Bob Dylan and James Brown being ahead of The Who. Possibly Chuck Berry. Stevie Wonder and The Beach Boys are contenders, too.

But Elvis Presley, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are the only artists where I have no problems with them being ranked ahead of The Who.

So, in your mind the Who have a good case as being the 4th greatest artist in rock history?

In my mind, yes. It's a common enough opinion for the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame to put on The Who's display, "Prime contenders, in the minds of many, for the title of World's Greatest Rock Band." This website, before I discovered it, used to list The Who as the 3rd greatest artist in rock history, behind only The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. A publication as notable as Goldmine Magazine lists The Who fifth all-time.

How can you have a problem with Dylan being ahead? To me he is possibly the 3rd most influential artist in history behind the Beatles and Elvis. Doesn't he tie with the Who in popularity? And he clearly takes cultural impact.

I don't have much of a problem with it, really. It's like a 1% problem instead of a 0% problem. What's his cultural impact, though? Being really famous?

Maybe I'm misinterpreting the criterion. Isn't his social commentary on "Blowin' in the Wind" culturally impactful? Also, where does his going electric fall?

I don't think so.

Some say that's an example of rock music influencing Dylan, rather than an example of Dylan influencing rock. In my opinion, though, I think it's emblematic of Dylan bringing his lyrical sensibility to rock music which is of enormous influence.

That list is a joke, with the top 8 acts all being white.
