Elton John ahead of Holly? That seems SO wrong, to me. I'd like to think Holly's advantages in Influence, Musical Impact and Cultural Impact make up for Elton John's enormous popularity gap. Same with Holly over the Supremes.

What makes you think Holly's musical impact was all that big?

He was just not all that impactful in his day. Elton John certainly caused a bigger stir in the business in his day, and of course he was infinitely more popular than Holly ever was.

Bruce,
do you like much of the music of Cream, The Who or Zeppelin? Just want to see if Hendrix is an isolated case.

Concerts, Bruce. Rock concerts.

In Holly's day, yes, but his musical impact grew exponentially in the years following his untimely demise. He's now near the pinacle when it comes to the respect and admiration of fellow rock musicians. Don't you think?

Albums are "horseshit". If you like them you've "bought into the hype".

Someone alert me when Daffy Duck's done shooting silly string all over the place.

haha, yeah i cant support that idea at all.

but... i will say i agree that sometimes people put too much stock into pacing/order or length or try to make it seem like albums as a whole are more important than the songs on them. to me, with some exceptions of course, i usually see almost all albums as collections of songs. almost like a film made up of separate 10 minute scenes that aren't connected. i see in reviews someone will say "this album was too long" and i think "good, more for my money". its not like a film, where pacing can bother me because i'm watching it as one work of art. to me, i can listen to half the album today and the other half tomorrow. i don't feel like i'm listening to one work of art, but a collection of several.

Yes, yes and yes.

All three artists are between # 101 and # 200 on my list of favorite artists of all time.

Here are some of their songs on my yearly lists of personal favorites:

MY TOP 100 RECORDINGS FROM 1965:
20 ¦ I Can't Explain ¦ The Who
39 ¦ The Kids Are Alright ¦ The Who

MY TOP 100 RECORDINGS FROM 1967:
2 ¦ Sunshine Of Your Love ¦ Cream

MY TOP 100 RECORDINGS FROM 1968:
38 ¦ White Room ¦ Cream

MY TOP 100 RECORDINGS FROM 1969:
8 ¦ Whole Lotta Love ¦ Led Zeppelin
71 ¦ Pinball Wizard ¦ The Who

MY TOP 100 RECORDINGS FROM 1971:
18 ¦ Black Dog ¦ Led Zeppelin
26 ¦ Stairway To Heaven ¦ Led Zeppelin
48 ¦ Won't Get Fooled Again ¦ The Who

Nothing by Hendrix comes close to making any of my lists.

Nobody knows what they were listening to at rock concerts, they were all stoned.

Holly is in my top 15 of all time and I'm not a big Elton John fan, but Holly was never in his league as a star, as a hitmaker, or as a live performer. He's only a legend because of his death, kind of like the vastly overrated Janis Joplin.

That's a good attitude, likea collection of totally unrelated short stories from the same author.

Better yet, pick out the songs on the album that you like, make them into MP3s, and never bother again with the rest of the songs. Put your computer or MP3 player on shuffle and the songs will come up at random. Much more enjoyable than listening to half of an album one day and the other half the next day.

I fail to see what is the fiun of listening to 8 to 14 songs in a row from the same artist.

BORING

Well sometimes you have to really get used to a specific production style or recording technique to really hear the music. For example, if I put my music library on shuffle and hear something beautifully recorded like something off Mingus's Black Saint & the Sinner Lady one minute, and hear something off the bootleg of Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall concert the next, the transition between the sound quality will be so jarring that it will detract from the music. On the other hand, if I simply put Goodman's Carnegie Hall concert on as a complete record, eventually I get used to the sound quality and can really hear the music. This is an extreme example but I think the same holds true to a lesser degree with rock music. If you only listen to music on shuffle, you tend to only notice the most obvious, generic differences between the songs. Listening to a bunch of songs by the same artist at once helps you differentiate superficially similar songs from each other and pick up on their subtle particularities much quicker.

Okay, now that I know that you like that dogshit Mingus album I can see we will never agree on much. One of the worst pieces of pretentious bullshit I've ever been exposed to.

I could clang two garbage can tops together, say that it was Mingus, and people would hail it as genius.

NOOOO!!!! Mingus is in my opinion on the mount rushmore of brilliant jazz musicians (with Django, Miles and Jelly Roll... and Coltrane. this mount rushmore has 5 guys on it)

I do do this at times, but I find that makes me an a bit too trigger happy a listener, too inclined to press the "skip" button.

Still though that accounts for ~50% of my music listening.

The other half is when i have more time and patience, and i find listening to a whole album can add something to it, "Whats going on" probably being the best example i can think of that i just wouldnt think of listening ot except start to finish.
