Look at the followers list or people who have been influenced by the Who and Led Zeppelin.

Finally, I can show Clash that there are lots of artists and bands influenced by Zep but not by The Who. Another of his arguments crumbling.

Oh, dear. Answers.com has become holy writ. Not bad for a website that cuts and pastes from wikipedia.

Actually the followers list basically comes from All Music Guide.

Record sales are probably not as complete a measure of popularity as they used to be. However, Last.FM only shows info from the last week from what I can see. If that's the case, I don't think that's enough info to make them of much value as a source.

Well of course Last.FM is important in the aspect it kind of show who is popular right now. Radiohead and the Beatles have been in top five for a long time.

By the way the Beatles will finally have their music on iTunes. People talk about cultural impact but the Beatles being on iTunes was covered on news networks today. How many bands can actually say that after 40 years after their breakup?

That's lasting popularity, not cultural impact.

You don't think 9/9/09 or what people called Beatles day around the world when they released their remastered CD's and Rock band was not a cultural event?

I don't remember it as being so. And I went out and bought the Rock Band game on that day.

I suppose it was a cultural event, but it was a pretty small one with little impact.

Cultural impact is more along the lines that when the Beatles came to America, virtually no American males wore their hair at all long, and people would dress fairly formally for a wide variety of settings. Thanks in large part to the Beatles, long hair for men became very common, and many settings were opened up to casual dress (and, at least for a while, a different sort of casual dress than had been seen before).

That they I bought The Beatles remastered cd´s and my entire perception of music was change.

For example, I discovered that Paul McCartney is one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

OK, my first shocking moment was when I heard Taxman (remastered version).

I have already listen to that song many times, but I don´t know what it is about the remastered version that the guitars blow me away. The whole song is really strong on instumentals, McCartney´s bass is classic, Harrison rhythm guitar is really strong, but when McCartney starts with his lead guitar… simply unbelievable. Each note is perfect, and by the end of the song the last bending notes are among the best I have ever heard. I love Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, and I´m telling you, I put McCartney up with them.

If there was a list here for rock greatest all around musicians Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder would be in the top ten IMO. As for "Taxman" it combines skeleton funk with the distorted Hendrix chord which might have influenced Hendrix since this track was at least 6 months before Hendrix "Purple Haze". The Beatles learned the chord from jazz music and the chord was also on the Beatles "The Word". Paul guitar solo is raga influenced and of course people like Jeff Beck was doing this type of guitar solo and George Harrison at this time was seriously into Indian music at that time. The "Taxman" riff influenced punk bands like the Jam "Start" and bass line was taken by Beck "The New Pollution".

Perhaps. They're not in Noel Gallagher's Top Ten Bands of All-Time, though:

1.The Beatles
2.The Rolling Stones
3.The Who
4.Sex Pistols
5.The Kinks
6.The La's
7.Pink Floyd
8.The Bee Gees
9.The Specials
10.(Peter Green's) Fleetwood Mac

Fair enough. Really didn't expect to see a lot of those artists in there (Floyd, Specials, Bee Gees). And suprised the Stone Roses aren't in there as Gallagher always quotes them as the band who made him want to get into music.

It reads like an "I Stole My Ideas from the Following Bands" list, because it probably is.
