Not necessarily saying that you are wrong with this but all of the underlined names I feel fairly confidently are misplaced over Black Sabbath.

The thing about Sabbath is that they're very strong in influence, but not so much in anything else, at least compared to artists ahead of them. So with most of their strength in influence, it's hard for them to top any artist who's more influential than they are, such as Holly. Generally, I believe the other underlined artists either comfortably beat them in both popularity and musical impact, or easily beat them in one while holding their own in the other, and some aren't too far behind in influence.

Everything but influence, I would say.

Everything but influence is what I would say too, but Floyd beats Sabbath in popularity by more than Sabbath beats them in influence.

Influence is pretty close, I'd say. Sabbath has massive influence on Heavy Metal, Pink Floyd sizeable influence on Prog and Alt Rock.

"Loved by iniquitous" is not part of the criteria.

As a fan of the Byrds also I can't understand why R.E.M. who I like is ahead of the Byrds. Let's face it Peter Buck of R.E.M was strongly influenced by the Byrds and their jangle sound. The Byrds also were one of the major groups that influenced a significant shift to the progressive and experimental side of rock music in the 60's. A massive influence on bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, Tom Petty and so many other musicians.

R.E.M. were kinda like the Black Sabbath of alternative though.

Interesting R.E.M. I think is not on the Rolling Stone Immortal Poll as voted by musicians and music producers. This list is subjective. You bring up something that I think is important IMO when you say R.E.M were kinda like the Black Sabbath of alternative rock. Black Sabbath say what you want about them their influence on hard rock/heavy metal has stood the time. To me that is a sign of greatness and something Sampson seems to ignore when I point out certain bands enduring influence. Many of the artists of the 50's and the 60's I can't really say their influence has been enduring.

So where do you draw the line with the Byrds and other people who were influential in their time but not that much in the modern era. The Byrds were influential for many bands. The Byrds influence though on music in the last 20 years is nowhere what it was in the mid 60's. The Byrds though were integral in the devolopment of folk rock, jangle pop, psychedelic rock, raga rock and country rock. Yet they were a key influence on R.E.M and a few other early alternative rock. IMO you have to respect how the Byrds were able to merge the lyrics of Bob Dylan and the folk, country and 12 string jangle inclinations of the Hard Day's Night/Beatles For Sale era Beatles and forge a new sound. "Eight Miles High" was an important step or upped the ante in the experimental aspect of rock music also. Those things can't be ignored IMO.

The Beatles are #2 on his influence list. The Beatles' enduring influence is being ignored, eh?

You know what I don't to rehash this again OK. I stated my reasons and I know many feel The Beatles should be #1 on the influence list. Sampson who I disagree with most of the time feels the Beatles are #1 in terms of musical influence but the supposed huge cultural advantage Elvis has over the Beatles makes Elvis #1 according to him. What I say to that is a bunch of B.S.

The Byrds are #61. REM are #65. So what's the problem?
