Because The Who have influence extending past hard rock and metal.
They are also objectively the greater live band than Zeppelin.

They are very close by the criteria though.

Being a greater live band has nothing to do with the criteria. As for influence on hard rock and metal, I completely disagree -- Led Zeppelin was the progenitor of hard rock and metal along with Sabbath and Purple.

Actually, the amount of agreement was high enough that The Who was moved ahead of Led Zeppelin. And Bruce is currently holding a tournament on artists most worthy of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame and The Who was voted in before Led Zeppelin.

First, you didn't understand what Negative Creep was saying (which is that The Who's influence extends further beyond hard rock and heavy metal than Led Zeppelin's does). Second, Led Zeppelin is not a progenitor of hard rock. They didn't release anything until 1969. Hard rock was already thriving by then. The progenitors of hard rock are The Kinks, The Who, Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Jefferson Airplane, Steppenwolf, and less successful/enduring artists such as The Sonics, Blue Cheer, The Amboy Dukes, and Iron Butterfly, among others. The groundbreaking efforts of those acts are a big part of why Led Zeppelin was such a huge success right out of the gate. The stage had been set.

It's almost tangible that Zeppelin wins in influence and popularity pretty easily, and I don't understand how The Who is more acclaimed by peers. Almost every goddamn musician from the 60's, 70's, and 80's praises Zeppelin to death.

Firstly, taking an old blues song and consumatting it not stealing. Secondly, "influence of Led Zeppelin" means the band's influence on other bands and musicians.

The courts said it was on "You Need Love" aka "Whole Lotta Love." It's not just "consumating" when Page puts his own name on there as the writer with no mention of the original writer (Willie Dixon) of the song.

Stairway to Heaven has nothing to do with "stealing". Its intro riff was only inspired by Spirit's "Taurus". Jimmy had no reason to give Spirit a credit.

The title is the same and so is much of the song. They heard it when appearing live with Holmes. How the FUCK is that not stealing when they put the song out with no mention of Holmes as the writer?
