Yeah, not bad, but Led Zeppelin is still way too high. |

Still no one, sorry. How about providing reasons based on the criteria as explained in the first post for a change? |

The Who > Zeppelin is shit and even ClashWho knows it. When it comes to Zep vs. The Stones, I can say that Zep wins in influence and musical impact. Cultural impact and popularity are very close. |

Cultural impact and popularity are very close. Sure, you can say that Zep beats the Stones in musical impact. Heck, you can say that Britney Spears beats the Stones in musical impact. It's just not, you know, anywhere close to being true. Influence, yeah, Zep wins. Musical impact, clearly the Stones. Their most respected albums are at least even with Zep's, and they have so many more albums, not to mention that they have a better reputation as a live band. Cultural impact is reasonably close, but I think it goes to the Stones. I think I've already explained this in the thread. And popularity is a huge win for the Stones. Yeah, Zep has sold more total albums, if we can go by the reported totals (and they're probably reasonably accurate here). But the Stones have sold about 200 million albums, too, so it's not like that's a blowout. The Stones have had WAY more hit singles, they get WAY more radio airplay, and they are probably the most successful touring band ever, while Zep isn't even close. You can keep making your little "proposed" lists with Zep up at number 6 or whatever, but until and unless you come up with some explanations for these things, no one's going to be buying it. |

I think Mick Jagger's cultural impact alone might beat Led Zeppelin's. Musical impact and popularity go to Stones as well, I agree with that. |

Even if RS beats Zeppelin, there is no way The Who does. |

I demand a detailed breakdown of The Who vs. Led Zeppelin. Let's see the reasoning behind The Who > Zep. |

But before you do that read through the first post of this thread. I don't want to see no more Google/Wikipedia breakdowns. |

Plants Strider wrote: I demand a detailed breakdown of The Who vs. Led Zeppelin. Let's see the reasoning behind The Who > Zep. Let's look at it year by year. 1969 Led Zeppelin and Led Zeppelin II versus Tommy. Led Zeppelin wins popularity, while The Who cleans up on musical impact. 1970 Led Zeppelin III versus Live at Leeds. Led Zeppelin wins popularity while The Who again clean up on musical impact. 1971 Untitled (Led Zeppelin IV) versus Who's Next. Led Zeppelin wins popularity, musical impact is close with a Who's Next edge. 1973 Houses of the Holy versus Quadrophenia. Led Zeppelin wins popularity, The Who wins musical impact. 1975 Physical Graffiti versus The Who By Numbers. Led Zeppelin wins popularity, but The Who had the bigger hit single. Musical impact? Probably Led Zeppelin, but the critics that year preferred The Who By Numbers. 1976-1978 Presence versus Who Are You. Pretty close popularity-wise. Led Zeppelin might have the album edge, but it's a blow-out on the single chart with "Who Are You" hitting #14 and the single from Presence, "Candy Store Rock", not even charting. Films The Song Remains the Same versus Tommy, Quadrophenia and The Kids Are Alright. This is obviously an epic blow-out. Townshend received an academy award nomination for Tommy, the soundtrack went to #2, and the film was a big hit. The Quadrophenia film is a cultural phenomenon in the UK. The Kids Are Alright is considered one of the best rock films ever. The Song Remains the Same just isn't. 1979 - 1982 In Through the Out Door versus Face Dances and It's Hard. Not much to say here. Led Zeppelin takes popularity, but none of these albums are particularly well received. Both The Who and Led Zeppelin manage to land a few decent chart hit singles and AOR radio hits from these albums. The Outtake Albums Coda versus Odds & Sods. Not much to say here, either, but you won't find a review site anywhere that gives a better score to Coda. And Odds & Sods is vastly more influential. These sorts of collections are often referred to as 'odds & sods' collections. The Rest Led Zeppelin break up, win the polar music prize, inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame on their first ballot, inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in its third year, do a one-off reunion concert, about to receive Kennedy Center Honors, etc. The Who break up, reform, launch several major tours, inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame on their first ballot (with Ahmet Ertegun of all people declaring them 'the favorite group of most of us'), Tommy hits Broadway, Concert for New York City, inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in its second year, Kennedy Center Honors, VH1 Rock Honors, Super Bowl, Olympic Closing Ceremony Grand Finale, etc. Can you see much daylight between these two bands? Looks pretty close, doesn't it? Some might lean towards The Who, some might lean towards Led Zeppelin. But it's actually a blowout because I didn't even mention "I Can't Explain", "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere", "Substitute", "I'm a Boy", "Happy Jack", "Pictures of Lily", "Magic Bus", My Generation (which has been selected to the USA's National Recording Registry and nothing from Led Zeppelin can say the same), A Quick One and The Who Sell Out. It's close between these two bands if you just count from 1969 to the present. Even then I think The Who have the edge. But The Who had already changed the world of rock from 1965 to 1968. And that's why this contest isn't close. |
