I cant even believe that we're discussing this again. When I make a poll in the music polls section, everyone whines about "too much classic rock discussion". But yet we're gonna debate Zep vs. Who for the 800,874,334th time?

COME ON!

Strider, can you just accept the fact that maybe The Who is actually greater? Especially on a live stage?

Well, don't forget that influence and and both lasting/initial popularity easily go to Zeppelin, and they are an overall more acclaimed band.

http://acclaimedmusic.net/

1 The Beatles
2 The Rolling Stones
3 Bob Dylan
4 David Bowie
5 Radiohead
6 Led Zeppelin
7 Bruce Springsteen

I admire Acclaimed Music, but there are some strange things. David Bowie, Radiohead and Prince, Bruce Springsteen are too high.

I agree, but that's how the critics see it, especially in other parts of the world.

In fact, if you see the site will realize that from 80s are used from many lists of alternative and indie music. In other words, pop and modern r&b artists are left aside.

You know that in the overall artist rankings songs are factored in to a much lesser degree than albums?

Top Album Artists:
#8 Led Zeppelin
#10 The Who

Top Song Artists:
#9 The Who
#11 Led Zeppelin

Looks like a tie to me.

I think it's because pop and contemporary r&b generally don't do that well with critics. Pure pop always had the problem that critics tend to take it less seriously than some other genres and contemporary r&b is a genre closely identified with top 40 radio so it suffers from the same problem. Glam metal, post-grunge, rap-metal a.s.o. are other genres that tend to get bashed by critics.

Of course you also have select modern pop and r&b artists with acknowledged classics like D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, George Michael, even Justin Timberlake.

This is laughable.

All those matchups are very close. I'd give a slight edge to The Who in influence and cultural impact, a slight edge to Zep in popularity. All in all The Who belong just ahead of Zep.

Imo, Zepp and The Who are tied here too. Both are very close in the criteria, but probably not would be part of the top 10, if I had to make this list.

I agree with paul, that breakdown is just wrong. What cultural impact did Zep have?

Than again it's hard to really say from my perspective because I wasn't there at the time. Like it or not, experience DOES mean a hell of a lot.

I'd like to hear Bruce weigh in on cultural impact between the two.

Zeppelin has a huge edge over The Who in popularity. Influence goes to Zeppelin -- have a look at the pertinent list.

The Who had huge influence on all of hard rock and punk. Zep's influence is limited to post-60s hard rock and metal. I don't see how Zep are more influential, even if they may be higher on Sampson's list.
