When did Traffic play anything at a really fast tempo? Or the Grateful Dead? I'm not saying everything those bands played were slow ballads, but I don't think their relatively uptempo stuff was any faster than Marley's relatively uptempo stuff.

It's ironic that you mention the Dead. The very first record by them I ever heard was uptempo--"Turn On Your Love Light." And their 1980 hit "Alabama Getaway" is quite fast.

BTW, I was just listening to a different live version of Marley's "No Woman No Cry." It's slowed down to ballad speed. It really has more in common with a rock ballad, I think, than it does with "Israelites" or "Cherry Oh Baby."

There's no Marley on this list:

No Marley on this list of the top 61 Rock artists of all time:

*sigh* Did I really need to specify that I meant credible lists? That Classic Rock magazine list is obviously personal favorites and nothing more. And a listener-voted radio survey obviously doesn't represent anyone trying to define rock and roll.

You know what I meant.

What makes a list credible?

Looks like I missed Bowie; Bruce, I edited my post to include David Bowie. I dropped The Clash, & Sly each a spot, and I dropped the Kinks out of my top 10.

Actually, that list looks more like an attempt at objectivity than it does a favorites list.
