It is definitely the greatest hip hop song. It brought the genre into the mainstream, had some decent chart performance, and brought lyrics to the forefront of rap. I think that last statement is enough indirect influence, really.

Alright, even though I'm pretty naive on the subject, The Message sounds like its worthy of the top twenty. Even I can see rap gets largely shortchanged all across the forum. Having one more rap song in the top fifty probably is in order.

If not the number one, SLTS is definitely the top 5.

Compromise: SLTS in the top 10. Good enough?

Anyway, back to hip hop: I think "Walk This Way" should be top 50. It was the song that propelled rap from popular to the biggest genre today.

1. Johnny B. Goode
2. Like A Rolling Stone
3. What'd I Say
4. Satisfaction
5. Respect
6. Rock Around The Clock
7. Stairway To Heaven
8. Jailhouse Rock
9. Smells Like Teen Spirit
10. Hey Jude
11. I Heard It Through The Grapevine
12. Good Vibrations
13. I Want To Hold Your Hand
14. Billie Jean
15. The Message
16. Papa's Got A Brand New Bag
17. Bohemian Rhapsody
18. A Day In The Life (Yeah, switched on the whole "3 Fab songs are overkill" thing)
19. Hound Dog
20. Superstition/Dock Of The Bay

???

You'd have it outside of the top thirty?
