pauldrach is right. And I think you missed the point still. If someone were to search for "The Eagles", it would not yield any results because it is spelled Eagles on this site. The same thing has been done for some of the Beatles songs, and they even had a "The" at the front of their name. |

Try typing "Hotel California" by "The Eagles" into Google and notice how quickly the autocomplete pops up with no quotes. |

I've never seen quotes in Google's autocomplete and I use them in Google all the time. Still, you're right. Searching for "The Beatles" doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Searching for "The Eagles" somehow achieves making even less sense. |

Again: if you don't use quotes, then it will return the page as long as the word "the" is somewhere on the page. Which, of course, it will be. That's why it makes no difference whether we call them The Eagles or just Eagles. |

Comfort_Eagle wrote: Are you people high? Adding "the" at the beginning of a Google search for the Beatles or Eagles isn't going to make a difference. and why the fuck would it not "make sense" to add the "the"? It is going to make a difference if you put the phrase into quotes. If you search for "the beatles", it will only show results with that exact phrase. To search for "the beatles" doesn't make a lot of sense because the band name will often appear without the article (for instance on many a DDD page) and such pages won't show up in that search. They would show up if you searched for beatles or the beatles (provided "the" appears somewhere on the page, which it often will). |

I'm in favor of having the correct name for each artist. Even though people often call them "The Eagles", their correct name is "Eagles". I think it's OK to omit "The" if it's part of a group name, but not OK to add "The" if it isn't part of the name, because adding something that doesn't belong is an error, while omitting "The" when it is part of the name is just shorthand. |
