I'm thinking that influence goes to Smells Like Teen Spirit.

I guess, yeah, but the difference isn't all that huge.

I think that Smells Like Teen Spirit is an obvious #1 but I'd rather refrain from writing that

I'd say that "Stairway"'s leads in popularity and cultural impact far outweigh SLTS's leads in the other two criteria. Stairway is a cultural milestone.

As well as Teen Spirit.

OK, my breakdown with explanations:

Popularity: Hard to measure as Stairway never was released as a single. Stairway is a highly popular tune, no question. SLTS was a #2 US single, and it's at least a well known as Stairway I think (maybe even more).

Musical impact: That one's very close I'd say. Both songs are highly acclaimed.

Influence: SLTS marked the point where alternative rock broke into the mainstream. It helped popularize a genre that has been huge for the last twenty years. Stairway was influential on power ballads which were a huge part of the rock music of the 1980's/early 1990's. Other than that I probably don't understand the nature of Stairway's influence.

Cultural impact: I still think it's hard to tell what is included under this criterion and what isn't. As already mentioned SLTS marked alternative rock's breakthrough, and with it probably other aspects of alternative culture (without me being able to specify them). I don't see any cultural impact for Stairway.

Once someone on this forum said that Yellow Submarine is a fucking children's song, and I would say the same on Johnny B. Goode. Smells Like Teen Spirit is probably the most influential song of all time. Smells Like > B. Goode

Fact C: You're an idiot. SLTS influenced ONE genre. If you try maybe you can count that much with your hands. Johnny B. Goode is the song on which all of rock was built on. No Johnny, no Sgt. Pepper, no Hendrix, no Stairway, and yes, no Teen Spirit.

The only advantage of B. Goode over Teen Spirit is that it is a root of rock song, but Teen Spirit is an overall greater song.

Let's do this by the criteria, shall we?

Influence: JBG. This is such a massive obliteration that we should just disregard the other three criteria rigt now, but let's go on.
Musical Impact: JBG. No, seriously.
Cultural Impact: Tie/JBG
Popularity: Pure sales, it's Teen Spirit, but putting everything in perspective, it's a tie OR Teen Spirit.

And the verdict is...Johnny B. Goode.
