What is London Calling doing at #11?

I'm thinking London Calling should be around 18.

Modern Sounds is a hugely influential album with a lot of acclaim. I'd say influence alone would be enough to put it above Purple Rain.

I wouldn't say that, but when you consider everything else - including that Modern Sounds was #1 for 14 weeks and on the charts for 101 weeks - I'd give it the edge overall. Maybe everyone already understands this, but just to make sure, Modern Sounds wasn't the first time a soul artist did country influenced music. Solomon Burke had already done "Just Out of Reach". I'm not sure he was first, but he preceded Charles.

Who's Next is much more influential (Purple Rain didn't do much that 1999 hadn't already done) and is slightly more acclaimed. And I think "Baba O'Riley", "Won't Get Fooled Again" and "Behind Blue Eyes" stack up well against "When Doves Cry", "Purple Rain" and "Let's Go Crazy", while the lesser known tracks on Who's Next stack up much better than the lesser known tracks from Purple Rain. Tracks like "Bargain" and "Going Mobile" have been staples of classic rock radio for decades.

I could be wrong, though. It's obviously really tight between the two.

Just to clarify, the list I posted was just taking off on the list of albums from each decade of DDD. It is not necessarily the order that I put.

Yeah, there's not a big difference. "I Would Die 4 U" is another pretty big one. With Purple Rain being #1 for 24 weeks, I'd give it big popularity advantage, with musical impact close, and Who's Next winning influence.

You are not alone.

True. Prince isn't that big anyways, neither is Purple Rain.

Okay, that's just...not true. As an artist, Prince is huge, and Purple Rain is too. I'd say Who's Next is greater by the criteria, but Purple Rain runs it close.

Popularity: 13xPlatinum vs. 2xPlatinum. Easy Purple Rain win.
Acclaim: Who's Next is considerably more acclaimed, but PR is no slouch here.
Influence: Who's Next.

It's close, but Who's Next wins, in my opinion. Purple Rain is very, very big. Who's Next is just slightly bigger.

Who's Next is 3x platinum as of 1993.
