Rubber Soul higher than The Dark Side of the Moon?

Influence: Rubber Soul
Musical Impact: The Dark Side of the Moon
Popularity: The Dark Side of the Moon

Musical Impact doesn't go to DSotM. Rubber Soul blew everyone away when it was released, and it received praise from practically everyone in the rock world at the time. Dark Side only wins popularity, and RS demolishes it in influence so badly that the win is pretty moot.

Musical Impact: acclaim from peers UPON RELEASE. That's why it's called impact. I've been corrected on this a lot; trust me, I know. Also, that's pretty close, while influence is a Rubber Soul win by miles and miles and miles and miles and miles.

I'd say TDSTOM is much more popular than Rubber Soul.

Not as much as Rubber Soul is more influential than TDSotM. Also, it's not way more popular. It's pretty close.

That's basically a tie.

LZII vs. Purple Rain

Influence: LZII, easily.
Musical Impact: Purple Rain. Not by much though.
Popularity: LZII

Certified sales:

Purple Rain: 15.88 million
LZII: 15.135 million

Last.fm:

Purple Rain: 157K listeners, 1.2M scrobbles
LZII: 590K listeners, 10.3M scrobbles

Couldn't ask for more clear proof that last.fm is a terrible source for popularity.

The two albums have basically sold the same amount--and Purple Rain is much more recent. Sure, it's possible that Purple Rain's popularity has waned. But to the point where the LZ album is TEN TIMES more popular? That's absurd. Clearly last.fm is only reaching a certain type of listener.

Stop using it as evidence of popularity. It's not.

Live at Leeds vs. The "Chirping" Crickets (#94)

Influence: Crickets
Musical Impact: Tie/Leeds
Popularity: Leeds

Tough, tough. This list needs a revision, I'd reckon. I remember we were working on one a few months back, and I wish we'd finish that.

Here's the cover the band wanted to use but EMI made them change it.

Much higher? It's just 7 positions behind Licensed To Ill, and I think would be hard to make a case for SOC being the higher of the two.

Where the hell is Close To The Edge? One of the most influential progressive rock albums of all time, #2 on the US Billboard charts for 32 weeks, #4 on the UK Charts and #1 on the Dutch Singles Charts.

It peaked at #3 on the US charts, and 32 weeks was its total chart run, which may have been what you meant to say. That's a good chart run, but not exceptional. There are many albums not on the list with comparable or better chart runs.

As far as influence goes, prog is a fairly small subgenre, and CttE came fairly late in the period of prog's peak period of popularity, so its potential for influence isn't all that high, unless it also had influence outside of prog.

Led Zeppelin II vs. Who's Next:

Influence: LZII
Popularity: LZII (#1 in both the US and UK + 8x Platinum for LZII vs. #4 in the US, #1 in the UK and 3x Platinum for Who's Next)
Musical Impact: Who's Next

Yeah, Zep II was a monster, no doubt.

This should be the next list that Brian, Brett and Bruce could update, IMO.
