Yes I am and it needs to be there. I'm not even that big of a fan of BLS, but it's probably their most important.

It only got decent reviews, I'd say either of their first two is far more important. Through the Ashes... charted lower on the Billboards but it was popular worldwide while The Blessed Hellride only really made an impact in the states. Through the Ashes... is more popular and acclaimed, and neither of these albums are hugely influential or original, but I would still give Through the Ashes... impact because it was embraced as a return to form for Machine Head while The Blessed Hellride was basically seen as a continuation of BLS's formula with a collective "eh".

:snacks: I have absolutely no opinion on this entire 2003 list

I think Blessed Hellride's mainstream breakthrough meant guitar solos were "cool" in mainstream metal again.

They were on the Greatest Metal Artists list once upon a time.

Does anyone remember dmille's GFR challenge some years ago? Admittedly, I haven't listened a whole lot to them since that, but I do remember thinking they were quite heavy, among the heaviest of their contemporaries.

For the 2003 list, I'm not sure what A Flame to the Ground Beneath has to do on it, except being awesome. Pretty sure the only reason the album is so known around these parts is because of how Daniel Heiman rose as a new fanfavourite for vocaljocks. Seeing as there aren't many strong releases that year, I guess it could stay, but I think Epica has it beat in most comparisons. I kinda like Joe C's list for this year, and definately agree that Through the Ashes... should be on it.

I'm purposely ignoring the 70s because its way too much of a shitstorm I don't feel like dealing with. Even if we were to completely invalidate the "most rock bands from the 70s just weren't metal" argument we had, we'd still probably have some trouble making 10 for each list.

anyways:

1. Sleep- Dopesmoker
2. Drudkh- Forgotten Legends
3. Enslaved- Below the Lights
4. Boris- Boris At Last: Feedbacker
5. Strapping Young Lad- Strapping Young Lad
6. Slough Feg- Traveller
7. Black Label Society- Blessed Hellride
8. Arch Enemy- Anthems of Rebellion
9. Children of Bodom- Hate Crew Deathroll
10. Machine Head- Through The Ashes Of Empires :nono:
