I don't think Joe said there was anything wrong with Pantera. He said Pantera fans. |

Eh...they probably wouldn't make my top 10 list of favorite metal bands, but I like them a lot. |

Though I don't listen to them that much these days, I do consider them my favourite band. |

http://ritesoftheblackmoon.tripod.com/article13.html This sums up my feelings on Pantera more than anything else, even though I do like their music. |

Interesting article, but all it says is that Pantera were not solely responsible for keeping metal 'alive' in the 90's. I never thought they were, though obviously some do. I also LOL at the "grunge came along and killed metal" thing, which people are still using as an argument to this day. |

Grunge didn't do jack shit. Kurt Cobain could never have been born and things still would have gone down the way they did. Here's why: Bruce was gone from Maiden (who were in shit shape regardless) Halford was gone from Priest (who were in great shape) Vince was gone from Motley Crue Axl Rose was being a prima donna shithead rather than a consummate frontman Joey was fired from Anthrax and replaced with an Eddie Vedder clone Dio leaving Black Sabbath because of not wanting to open for Ozzy, plus when Ozzy said he was retiring he did not mean "I'm gonna rejoin Black Sabbath" so Tony Iommi got super fucked over. By 1994, the only band from the old guard that wasn't completely underground was Slayer, who the mainstream press loved so much to begin with. That and a few black/death metal bands. Metal is of course an underground creation, but in order for it to be a commercial force you need to have some sort of star in the mainstream. Bands come and go, so naturally some new bands like Blind Guardian, Iced Earth and Gamma Ray to name a few should have taken their place. That didn't happen. The gatekeepers just shut them out. Yea there was Pantera but they were kept away with a 20 foot pole, and they alone were not enough to sustain a hold on the mainstream But what about Metallica you say? At some awards show an trimmed, dressed up Lars Ulrich said "metal's over." |

Let's not forget Megadeth when it comes to keeping metal alive through the 90's too. Their masterpiece was released right at the beginning of the decade. I can mostly agree with what you said though, especially the Axl Rose comment... |

Eh, I didn't include them because their output went completely to shit in 96-99. |
