Minstrel songs? Depends what are you referring to with Minstrel songs? American popular music certainly began with Black Minstrelsy music in the mid 19th century (in that it was the first distinctly American genre).

So yes. Songs from Minstrel shows was the first pop music as we think of pop music today. Thanks.

It really depends on how you define the term "pop music". I believe German pop musicologist Peter Wicke considers the waltzes of the Strauss dynasty to be the beginning of pop music (but that wouldn't be very American obviously).

yeah ^. it's different regionally. what was considered popular music in america was quite different from what was considered popular music in india. also 'pop music as we know it' is not really a homogenous entity either..

Yeah that's why I went with the it depends. The first form originating from America was Minstrelsy. Of course the 20th century is largely the story of American popular forms originating in the Mississippi delta among poor blacks (and to a lesser extent whites) spreading its tentacles all over the world.

I just did this with "Eminence Front". It's absolutely astounding.

What is up with the album sales of Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida? 30 Million? Really? How?

I think the answer is "they lie".

The album was certified 4x platinum in the US, which means 4 million copies. The rest of the world's certifications amount to less than a million, most of them from Germany. Every other album listed as selling that much on Wikipedia has *certified* sales of at least 13 million. Unless someone knows of a country where there's no gold certification where Iron Butterfly albums can be found in every home, I'm going to say they just made this up or at least used some very, very creative accounting.

I'm genuinely curious where you encounter Justin Bieber fans in large enough quantities that they merit such a high ranking on this list of yours.

The people who actively hate Justin Bieber on YouTube comments and such are 1000x more annoying than people who genuinely like Justin Bieber.

So, like, you willfully added a bunch of Justin Bieber fans on facebook and twitter so you could complain about it? I'm confused.

That is a fact. But this list is about the worst fans.

I'd say "rockists" are by far the worst fans. People who say things like "rock is dead", "I was born in the wrong generation", "music today is terrible!" Etc.... It's an extremely depressing and sad stance.
