Charles Mingus - Moanin' Joanna Newsom - Emily Hard hard hard hard hard. Moanin' is simply one of the best Mingus tracks (and Mingus is my favorite artist, so that automatically makes it one of my favorite songs). From the first moment that trumpet plays the incredible theme with the most delicious tone this side of Miles Davis on 'Round Midnight, you know you're in for an insane ride. It never disappoints. While the theme always remains in sight, it's frequently adorned with freer playing that adds depth to the performance, keeping it from getting too comfortable. A similar thing happens later, during the solos. There's a ton going on in the rhythm section behind the solo, so much so that the solo has to compete for my attention, a stellar effect. On the other hand, Emily is a long-time favorite of mine and has even been my favorite song at points. Joanna has a simply lovely voice, and it perfectly combines with the beautiful harp and tasteful orchestral arrangements. The final four or so minutes remain one of the most powerful sections of music I've ever heard. Pconnects say Joanna. Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return) Ok, fine, Hallowed Be Thy Name is a good song. It's probably even a great song. Maybe even the best Maiden song. In fact, I'll go ahead and call it fucking awesome. You could press me enough and maybe even get me to say that it's the best classic metal song. But it's up against Voodoo Child (Slight Return). Easy. |

I think that's fairly evident: non-vocal instruments being used to simulate the human voice. Read my quote again. Forgotten Son wrote: While we're partaking in this literalist faggotry, I would also like to point out that some dictionary definitions do not preclude those noises not produced by human vocal chords from being referred to as "singing". Why should they? The moonlight sonata isn't a song. The end. If I knew you were going to split hairs over this like a whiny little bitch, I would have just named it DDD Music Tournament, but I figured no one was that anal. |

new matchups: Charles Mingus - Moanin' vs Joanna Newsom - Emily Love Emily but it is time for Joanna's run to end. Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name vs Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return) Well looks like my favorite song will finally bite the farm here but really I can't say that it would upset me because Voodoo Child is an incredible musical statement. |

Moanin' and Voodoo. Wow, from these and the next few match-ups, it looks like the finals are going to end up a lot more classic rock than I would have expected. |

It should be Van Morrison - Cyprus Avenue vs Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower cause Cyprus beat The Rat. See George wrote: Van Morrison - Cyprus Avenue 15 - 9 The Walkmen - The Rat Shoot, thanks. My method of updating the front page is quite susceptible to error... Though I do have hope that myself/others would notice errors such as these when the matchup arrived. |

Quote: Final 16 (8 matchups): Two matchups every two days Quarter-finals (4 matchups): Two matchups every two days Semi-finals (2 matchups): One matchup every two days Final (1 matchup): One matchup with a two day cut-off point - unless the difference is less than 5 votes, in which case we continue until that difference is exceeded. Discuss? I'm gonna have to vote Moanin' and Hallowed Be Thy Name. Moanin' is probably my favourite discovery of the tournament, and Hallowed Be Thy Name never ceases to be awesome. Kill any sense of irony and listen to it for what it is, an intense, dramatic, yet somehow fun gallop of a song. With lyrics that are actually good, notevenjoking. IMO Voodoo Child is overrated. Would I be missing the point if I complained about the production? |

Moanin (motly cause grooveshark doesnt seem to open , but I think id have gone with Moanin since it was one of my faves of this tournament, bass sax ftw ) Voodoo Child (slight return) - Maiden are one of my my favorite metal bands and Hallowed is by far my favorite song by them and a top 10 as far as metal songs overall go .....yet this was so easy that it is almost sad ..... but im glad to see it's not one way traffic and Hallowed is getting the votes it rightfully deserves ..... |
