Quote: Dorothy Ashby - The Windmill of Your Mind 6 - 5 Hoahio - Less Than Lovers, More Than Friends :( I really liked that Hoahio song. It really surprised me for some reason. |

Miles Davis - Black Satin American Football - Never Meant Props to whoever nominated the American Football song, the guitar line is so slick and pretty and the singing is nice and chill. It's a really good song. There's no really catchy vocal melody or anything, but it's still a really nicely written pop song. I'm not as big of this Davis song, and I feel like it might instantly invoke attention because the name "Miles Davis" attached to it and makes Never Meant the underdog. It's a really unique song, but it's not my favorite style of Davis. It feels a little bit aimless and doesn't really grab my attention. It's certainly a much more complex and challenging song however. I really love all of the sounds that are coming out of the music, but I feel the aimlessness of it puts it slightly behind the super-immediate Never Meant. Repeated listens over time might eclipse the American Football song, but I can't say I prefer Miles right this instant. Astor Piazzolla - Concierto para Quinteto Elton John - Indian Sunset I love the Astor Piazzolla! This is a great piece of music, and I'm not sure no matter how clever of a pop song Elton's got in store for me, I don't think it could compare. Well, listening to the Elton John, it's not really a straight forward pop song, but a nice epic one. I've heard it more than a few times before, but just didn't know it by name. It's a bit cheesy, but still really nice. John's voice as usual is brilliant. Overall it's good, but I just enjoyed the other one much more. Can – Tape Kebab Matt Molloy, Paul Brady, Tommy Peoples - Matt Peoples (reels) Tape Kebab is pretty baller, I say that with no worry of how white and geeky that comes off as. It's nice and long which isn't a bother at all to me (someone who's favorite piece of music is thirty-six minutes long) and is one of those songs that you just wish wouldn't ever end because it's just so good. It reminds me of New Order's Elegia in that sense (which means I hope there's an extended seventeen minute version out there ^^). In fact I feel like it just cuts off at the end just a little too suddenly. Maybe that's because I'm too spoiled from epic post-rock climaxes, but I just feel like there was no resolution to the song. It just kind of stopped. Matt Peoples is nice, but I'm not the biggest fan of Irish folk. I think it all just sounds so samey. Like, I don't think I would know the difference between this and some Pogues or Flogging Molly interlude. Danzig – Godless Whiteroom - Papillons I'm really surprised to hear a Danzig song that's pretty good which isn't called Mother. In fact, I think it's better than Mother. I always loved Danzig's voice and this song is a pretty good platform for his intensity. Unfortunately it's matched up against my nom which is still much better. I love everything about Papillons from the frantic opening backed up by delicate piano to the glitch freakout that closes out the song. |

Dips, Tape Kebab is from their performance on the John Peel radio show, and it was the second (and last) song they performed on that appearance. I'd also guess that it was an improvisation, but I can't be positive. Since they only had 20 minutes to perform, I'd imagine they had to cut off after 9 minutes, and that would explain why there's no real resolution to it. Unfortunately, there's also no other recorded versions of it. |

Miles Davis - Black Satin: http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Black ... c6Kt?src=5 American Football - Never Meant: http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Never ... ncme?src=5 Both were pretty cool. Astor Piazzolla - Concierto para Quinteto: http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Conci ... 8gso?src=5 Elton John - Indian Sunset http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qd08FyXY3E Damn, brutal match-up! I loved Concierto para Quinteto and thank whoever nominated it. Great toe-tapping melodies and vibrant performance - I will enjoy this many more times, and would have voted for it against almost any other song in the tourney. Indian Sunset is a masterpiece. A superb song which Elton sings like he means every word, his piano playing is awesome, all the instrumentation is perfect. Can – Tape Kebab: http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Tape+ ... nXDC?src=5 Matt Molloy, Paul Brady, Tommy Peoples - Matt Peoples (reels): http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Matt+ ... GeCl?src=5 Quite like both, not overawed by either. Danzig – Godless: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfX557swcqE Whiteroom - Papillons: http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Papillons/b7TQg?src=5[/quote] I did like Godless: great drumming and the angsty vocal delivery works well. Papillons is just brilliant. |

Miles Davis - Black Satin American Football - Never Meant Not particularly crazy with these tracks. I usually love Davis but this track does not catch me. It has some cool groove, but all around is not a big thing. It still wins though, Never Meant is far away from being my thing. Is not bad but I don’t really like it. Not at all. Astor Piazzolla - Concierto para Quinteto Elton John - Indian Sunset Nothing against Elton, Indian Sunset is magnificent, I really liked it, but this was ridiculously easy for me. Piazzolla is the man, probably my favourite tango artist. Concierto para Quinteto is a classic, it has everything. So far is my favourite thing in this tourney… so I won’t stop voting for it. Can – Tape Kebab Matt Molloy, Paul Brady, Tommy Peoples - Matt Peoples (reels) Tough one. I really enjoyed Tape Kebab, good guitar performance, I thought that would be enough but Matt Peoples got me, since its start. I really really love that kind of music, really my thing. Danzig – Godless Whiteroom – Papillons Man, Godless is fantastic, I’ve never been a big fan of Danzig but this song is the real thing. Love how creepy it is, it has a really good atmosphere, cool vocals, furious drums, solid guitars. You can’t ask for more. Papillons is very good as well, though, but not my style. |

Hopefully I have time for more but I just had to vote for this now. Astor Piazzolla - Concierto para Quinteto: Perfect (10/10) Elton John - Indian Sunset: Perfect (10/10) Um Holy shit I am totally in awe of Concierto para Quinteto. I haven’t been this blindsided by a piece in quite some time. It is absolutely sublime from start to finish but I love the transitions from contemplative beauty to energetic tempo. But really any more description would just sound like hyperbole. I almost never give a song a Perfect rating the first time through. I have less than 250 popular music songs that are perfect and even with classical the total comes to only about 300. Indian Sunset is one of my favorite Elton tunes and is one of that select group. But despite my history with it and how great it is and despite this being just a first listen I don’t think I can vote for anything other than Concierto para Quinteto. This is the best nomination that I had not heard before in any of the tournaments. Edit: Miles Davis - Black Satin: Good-Great (7-8/10) American Football - Never Meant: Good-Great (7-8/10) I like Miles Fusion period but this song illustrates why it definitely isn’t my favorite era of his. All of the stuff from this era is rhythmically interesting and Miles definitely does some interesting things with timbre and some with harmony but for the most part the melodic and textural interest is kind of meh and it drags on for a bit. It has good elements but doesn’t hold together like his earlier music. That said Miles still wins this matchup. The American Football tune is pleasant and has an enjoyable melody but it goes on a bit too long and just isn’t quite as interesting. Danzig – Godless: Poor-Mediocre (4-5/10) Whiteroom - Papillons: Great-Exceptional (8-9/10) The Danzig is some pretty bland tripe. The elements of several metal styles I dislike combined together. The vocals in particular are annoying and the lyrics are atrocious. The drums and opening riff are decent but when I saw it went on for 6 minutes I went Papillons doesn’t have to do much to hurtle over this low bar but it is in fact an excellent song. I love the East Asian folk instrument sound (at least that’s what it sounds like to me) mixed with the somewhat spacey atmosphere. I think it drags a bit towards the end but I liked it a lot. This definitely feels like a Dipsoid nom. |

Mitch NZ wrote: Miles Davis - Black Satin American Football - Never Meant I was hoping for greatness with Black Satin, but all I heard was a bunch of tabla. Not my thing. Never Meant was pretty cool in a whiny indie rock kinda way, I can certainly dig it. Astor Piazzolla - Concierto para Quinteto Elton John - Indian Sunset Concierto para Quinteto was a pretty cool piece of music, I always love the sound of accordion. I'm surprised at how much I liked Indian Sunset. The epic vibe felt good, and I can't complain about Elton's voice. Can – Tape Kebab Matt Molloy, Paul Brady, Tommy Peoples - Matt Peoples (reels) I liked Tape Kebab more than I was expecting, the guitar and synth interplay was very cool indeed. I agree with Pnoom that Matt Peoples was definitely good, but it can't stand up to the Can piece. Danzig – Godless Whiteroom - Papillons That Danzig song was very Maiden, which I always appreciate. The vocals weren't nearly as bad as other metal songs in this tourney either. Papillons was pretty good, but I definitely enjoyed Godless more. |

You can win easily. Just not with Danzig. Besides, all metalheads are elitist. It's only natural. I say this all in jest. |
