Pretty much anything having anything to do with modern country music qualifies for this thread.

Why do people fetishize talent used worthlessly?

I don't see anybody on this page "fetishizing" anything.

Actually, after I posted that, my first thought was something along the lines of: this is such a dreamcoil post. I disagree with you a fair bit but you are absolutely right on that point.

It can be interesting to think about the ways in which worthless music that evinces great talent is worthless in different ways from worthless music that is talentless, but that doesn't make it any less worthless.

Responding to a video of a song with no redeeming qualities with "Gretchen Wilson can sing though" as if it is a redeeming quality is close enough. It's valuing the mere presence of talent when that talent is used in a totally and unmitigatedly disastrous manner.

But I will admit that an aspect of my post was in response to the entire vocalist subforum, which is predicated on fetishizing horrendously misused talent. Yousha's post happened to remind me of the existence of that subforum and hence I asked.

it depends though you know, like 'hot girls have problems too' is completely talentless but less worthless than a lot of other music that is talentless and worthless. i think my problem in communicating may be that im extrapolating talent to a para-musical realm, though it all boils down to relatability at the end of the day, imo

I tell you who didn't waste talent. Townes Van Zandt.

Because he didn't have any.

Yeah if you want talent you need to be hooking up with used-to-be-fat girls.

Not really sexism but lookism. People with good singing voices can manipulate their mouths well.

Even so, it seems pretty clear to me that some a lot of people value music at least partially for its ability to entertain and people often find specific talents or unique traits (i.e. the ability to hold a tune and have an aesthetically pleasing voice) to be entertaining. So naturally some people tag more worth to an artist that has talent than one that does not. I see Yousha's comment as simply stating that there is at least one positive quality to Gretchen Wilson as a musical artist, not that it saves her music from being trash (which would constitute fetshizing, imo).
