I really think "Piano Man" is the worst song ever.

Nah.

I'm sure there's some Attila stuff that's much worse.

Attila is awful on all sorts of levels, but something that's truly worthy of being called the worst of all time has to at least have a veneer of apparent respectability. Anyone can make something as awful as Attila or Knife the Puppets simply by not trying. It takes a special talent to make something awful in the way Piano Man is awful, and that's what makes it so much worse than Joel's work with Attila.

I agree, plus you never have to hear Attila, whereas Piano Man is playing all the time.

I don't really even like Billy Joel (and I think We Didn't Start the Fire is fucking AWFUL), but I don't mind Piano Man at all.

A lot of people think [I] just came out of the piano bar... I did a lot of heavy metal for a while. We had about a dozen gigs and nobody could stay in the room when we were playing. It was too loud. We drove people literally out of clubs. -Billy Joel

I laughed

My point is less about Piano Man than it is about music generally, though Piano Man is pretty terrible.

Sure, in roughly the same sense that serial rape is worse than serial murder. At some point distinguishing which is worse really becomes entirely pointless, and both songs are well past that point.

I had to write a response paper about it for history class.

"Piano Man" ain't bad. It's got some decent lyrics. "We Didn't Start the Fire" is a catchy little pop song. I guess on repeated listens both songs can swerve hard into the annoying category, but I haven't heard them all that often. I think stuff like "The Entertainer" and "Big Shot" are far worse. I loathe "Big Shot". Joel does have some really good stuff, though, like "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant", "Rootbeer Rag", "Pressure" and "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)".

That is completely incorrect. Billy Joel has made some bad music in his day but Piano Man is a beautiful song.

I never expected this board to talk so much about Billy Joel.
