They're like Sergei Prokofiev in that they both wrote music for a film.

They have a ton of great songs, but they never really were an albums band, despite helping to make the album as a format popular.

I'd say it's worth listening (and relistening) to all their albums to find your favorite songs though. I haven't sat through an entire Beatles album in over a year but I'd still put them in my top 5 bands of all time.

Boring.

Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Talk Talk, King Crimson, Can.

Keep in mind this is bands, not artists, which would be very different.

Yeah i've started considering artists/bands on the basis of their collected works (no sense to be tied in to the album format). Each song is a work every bit as much as an album (which is of course a different sort of work). I'm relistining to all of my favorite pop artists discographys and I just finished Black Sabbath's. One thing about them that is definitely the case is their songs are better than their albums. Even though their first 6 albums are all excellent each on of them has at least half of its songs that are better than the album itself and most have more.

Now that's just a fucking ridiculous thing to say, they were the original albums band.

The only album of theirs I'd call subpar is Yellow Submarine, and it's only half a Beatles album. Honestly I can't think of many bands with a discography of more than a few albums that's as consistant as The Beatles, besides Radiohead... and Porcupine Tree maybe.

They were important towards making the album the dominant format, but I honestly can't think of any of their albums that functions better as a complete whole than it does as a collection of songs. Obviously the b-side of Abbey Road, but other than that.
