That is not a theme and it is not something that is at all supported musically by what they are doing. |

No, it's very much the concept of the album, they may not have started production with that concept in mind, but that ended up being the concept in the end, that's why they went with the plain white cover, that's why it was simply called The Beatles, because the sessions were so all over the place that they realized the only workable concept was an anti concept. So yes, because they ended up with such a disparate selection of songs they worked all that chaos into the concept of the album. The minimal design of the cover gave the album a mysterious presence, they were basically saying "fuck it there's no cover or title that could describe what this album is like, just listen to it and find out what's inside". |

Don't you hate performance art? |

It would only be conceptual art if there wasn't any actual music inside. |

If someone played a series of Beatles songs in sequence and claimed it was a unified work of art you'd laugh your ass off at them and call them dirty, no-good, assholes (and probably many other things I'm thinking of). But because the Beatles happened to package their music into something that you've decided you have a vested interest in defending (an album) then all of the sudden that sort of justification flies. |

The intention of an artist's concept is irrelevant to the actual product. However, the way that I listen to and hear albums treats every album as a concept. A lot of my favorite Beatles songs come from the White Album but the White album is not one of my favorite Beatles albums simply because I find it so disjointed (in a negative way, a positive example of a disjointed album would be You Forgot It in People) that I can't really enjoy the whole thing. I don't see why "someone playing a series of Beatles songs in sequence and claiming it was a unified work of art" is such a problem because god bless playlists. |

I don't see why "someone playing a series of Beatles songs in sequence and claiming it was a unified work of art" is such a problem because god bless playlists. The intention of an artists concept is irrelevant you're correct. But what they call the work of art is not. There is only one way to experience the White Album by the Beatles and that is to listen to it. But that's really what I'm saying. I'm not saying disjointed can't be good. It just has to have something unifying it at least for it to be a good album (besides just having good songs). Finally as to the last point I agree completely that it isn't a problem. Its just not a work of the Beatles when it happens. You're looking at my comment as if I'm still espousing a philosophy that judges artists on the basis of their albums. I'm not espousing that at all. Its very possible that I like every track on the White Album better than the White Album as a complete work (well except Revolution 9 obviously). |

For some reason it really works (even with the silly chorus). And just to be clear you dislike Revolution 9 just not as much as these tracks? |

Honestly, I wouldn't say I dislike it. It doesn't do anything for me but I'm not against the song. |
