Her strengths are managing to write alternative rock that sounds different than everyone else, if not original. Especially female fronted alternative rock, because it seems like every new female alt singer/songwriter with a bit of an edge tries to be PJ Harvey without the metaphorical balls to really explore areas of music outside of guitar-driven alt rock. This is a bit of a cop-out, but her biggest strength is her personality. She's got a knack for taking weird sounds and tying them into her vision, which on Let England Shake is more familiar because she's had a long career and we as listeners know what to expect from her. The rawness and the passion that she has doesn't sound raw and passionate anymore because she's older, and her music has matured. She hasn't lost her strength as a songwriter, but simply moved on to different territories. She's not wild anymore, but she's certainly not tamed either. The tension in her music is no longer punk-rock and sexual, it's more baroque and sensual now. She's not kicking you in the teeth anymore, she's just biting you on the lips.

Best songs are "Let England Shake" and "On Battleship Hill" and "Written on the Forehead". Also, props to "The Last Living Rose" as being one of the best pop songs of 2011.

totes agree. one of my favourite releases of the year

Also "The Colour of the Earth" isn't to be underestimated. That's probably my favorite song on there. Love the way the vocal layers slowly build.

I think Grizzly Bear's Shields is pretty great, but I was underwhelmed with how it closes. Compared to Foreground and Colorado, it just kind of sits there for me, despite its bigger dynamics. But for 90% of the album, it is unbelievably sublime.

Also finally listened to Death Grips after neglecting it for so long, specifically The Money Store. I think what they're doing completely turns my tastes that I thought I knew upside down and challenges them. On the one hand, they are an amazing high energy noise band whose assault never feels inaccessible because they work in very catchy grooves. On the other side though, they actually come across as pretty damn campy with how unfashionable their delivery can be. In fact, they aren't too far away from what Insane Clown Posse does as far as their rap element goes. So the duality here is completely batshit crazy, and at times you'll feel like they veer off into actually feeling like its terrible music, but the force here is constantly persistent and never really lets up. It's very much the car crash syndrome here.

I think because of this, it's one of the great albums this year. Your mind will question its credibly from moment to moment, but your body will just absorb every jittery unpredictable minute of it.

I like Money Store better, but Mitch is Right. NLWD is really disturbing and honestly there are some elements of subtlety, not exactly something Death Grips has explored before. They are, without a doubt, the most exciting artist of this decade (so far anyway). It's insane how much they balance the accessible and the inaccessible.

I've just heard it once, but I thought NLDW was their weakest effort to date.

Going through my C's

Group Sex- Circle Jerks

Yeah so I like this better than what Black Flag became after Keith Morris left the band, but its too short. Though I must admit, it is an example of punk rock form at its finest. "World Up My Ass" pretty much speaks volumes about how I feel lately. 7.5/10

Circulatory System- Circulatory System

The melodies are ethereal, if not repetitive as all fuck, but it listens better than any OTC album other than Dusk. 8/10

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Remember when this band was relevant? Damn, what a flash in the pan. This debut is a classic though. Cool Goddess through Heavy Metal is one of the best runs in indie rock history. 9/10
