Mihaly Vig – Filmzenek Tarr Bela filmjeihez
I don’t quite get it – there’s gotta be some missing variable, some thing I haven’t identified in the equation that is this album because it just doesn’t add up. Most of the tracks are very short, so I wouldn’t expect them to have the time and space to build up their atmosphere, but at the same time they’re so repetitive that even their meager runtimes seems like a generous allotment. And yet, this lo-fi-minimalist-Hungarian folk-fusion – with a dash of sleazy easy-listening thrown in on at least one occasion – works perfectly. Perhaps the element I can’t identify in the sound of the music itself is my love for the films of Bela Tarr, or maybe Mihaly Vig just found the perfect balance between repetition and runtime, or maybe the hazy production, with pianos and guitars sometimes slightly out of tune, elevates the not-so-terribly-interesting-on-the-surface pieces into something otherworldly, music from an alternate dimension not much different from our own but all the more intriguing for it. Whatever it is, I’m in love – especially with the two gorgeous and slow-burning pieces from Werckmeister Harmonies that end the album with an overwhelming overflow of beauty.
