Attempting to redo my RYM ratings as I've feel I've gotten too lax on what albums really strike me and basically this is an attempt to sort out the good from the okay and the great from the good and my absolute favorites from the great. Fuck me right? Anyway, I used to consider 3.5 stars an average album, but I'm not applying the Netflix (5-Loved it, 4-Really liked it, 3-Liked it, 2-Didn't like it, 1-Hated it) rating system so...you totally needed to know all that. Doves - Lost Souls ![]() Air - The Virgin Suicides ![]() Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker ![]() Bebel Gilberto - Tanto Tempo ![]() MJ Cole - Sincere

Having 3.5 as average leaves your scale too bottom heavy and more room for "hate". I'd say there are more levels of appreciation than of disdain towards something. For me average falls between a 3 and 2.5 for RYM ratings. 2.5 being mediocre/just below average, and 3 being decent/just above average. |

Yeah I'm setting my 3 as my "average" now. |

My ratings scale is so fucked by now and I feel like it'd just be a bitch to fix it. I rarely ever rate anything below 3.5. |

maybe im just to easy to impress but i rarely listen to albums i don't end up liking. i like to think that it's because i pick and choose the albums that i know i'll like. but in an out of ten scale i can't say ive listened to many albums that i'd rate below a 5 or 6. |

Mine is based on my "out of 10" scale. 1/2 star: terrible 1 star: very bad 1 1/2 stars: bad 2 stars: pretty bad 2 1/2 stars: okay, leaning toward bad 3 stars: okay, leaning toward good 3 1/2 stars: pretty good 4 stars: good 4 1/2 stars: very good 5 stars: great Granted, words like terrible and great are a matter of semantics, and I don't use them as often as a lot of people. The big thing to understand is that okay starts at 2 1/2 stars (5/10) and good starts at 3 1/2 stars (7/10). |

I guess I think of 2.5 as average, but I rarely listen to an album if I don't expect to like it. My RYM thing looks like this right now:

That is probably what an accurate rating scale should look like. |

fuck accurate scaling system. If it wows me, it gets a 4.5 or 5. and I rarely listen to stuff without listening to some song off the album and/or reading about it, so that I know I'll definitely like it to some degree. hence, I have very very few albums under 3.5 stars. |

Same here. It's been a long time since I last listened to a new album I didn't enjoy. Still my RYM probably is far too heavy on 4.5 ratings, at least for music. I already considered going through the whole thing and rating the bulk of them down a little but it would take me ages and I really don't care enough. |

Mihaly Vig – Filmzenek Tarr Bela filmjeihez I don’t quite get it – there’s gotta be some missing variable, some thing I haven’t identified in the equation that is this album because it just doesn’t add up. Most of the tracks are very short, so I wouldn’t expect them to have the time and space to build up their atmosphere, but at the same time they’re so repetitive that even their meager runtimes seems like a generous allotment. And yet, this lo-fi-minimalist-Hungarian folk-fusion – with a dash of sleazy easy-listening thrown in on at least one occasion – works perfectly. Perhaps the element I can’t identify in the sound of the music itself is my love for the films of Bela Tarr, or maybe Mihaly Vig just found the perfect balance between repetition and runtime, or maybe the hazy production, with pianos and guitars sometimes slightly out of tune, elevates the not-so-terribly-interesting-on-the-surface pieces into something otherworldly, music from an alternate dimension not much different from our own but all the more intriguing for it. Whatever it is, I’m in love – especially with the two gorgeous and slow-burning pieces from Werckmeister Harmonies that end the album with an overwhelming overflow of beauty. |
