2012 is so much better than 2010 and 2011

So you noticed, too? Damn Carly and Japandroids for ruining music forever.

No, I'm not saying that 2012 is overall a weak year, although by the same token, there's no year where I've watched every movie or TV show or played every video game. Based on what I've heard (which is always the case), I wouldn't say that this has been the best year.

Overall, I'm counting ten albums, plus a video game soundtrack, plus a couple albums I only listened through one time. That might not compare to what some of you go through, but my time is limited, and it eventually gets wearying listening to albums because they're from 2012 instead of because they're what I feel like listening to right now. And the music landscape is largely dominated by styles that hold little to no interest for me. What I ending up doing was sampling albums from different sources: one from pop radio, one recommended by critics, one recommended here, one that was the return of an older band...

If your favourite album of 2012 is by Epica and you think the year is shit overall, you're doing it wrong. So very wrong.

I'm inclined to agree, but in terms of canon stuff 2010 was pretty damn epic. We had a hip hop masterpieces from FlyLo, Kanye West and Big Boi, a handful of great indie rock albums with Halcyon Digest, High Violet, Contra and the Suburbs, and had some great indie pop albums with Congratulations, Treats, Teen Dream and Have on Me. There was also Plastic Beach, There Is Love in You, The ArchAndroid, Brothers by the Black Keys and This Is Happening by LCD Soundsystem which weren't amazing but were definitely fun listens.

I think your attitude toward seeking out new stuff is admirable, but I feel like your approach is wrong. Maybe instead of looking to get into stuff released this year you should instead spend your time exploring new genres that interest you? I feel like your trying to force yourself to endure material released from genres that you don't have primal interest, and the end result of that listening experience is never going to be good.

For instance, if I wanted to get into Symphonic Metal or whatever genre you enjoy, you probably wouldn't recommend that I listen to something from this year because it wouldn't be a proper and effective exposure to the genre as a whole. I'm sure that there's an album from another time that would be better at getting me invested in the genre.

Did you skip Get Up with It? I was interested in what you had to say about that one.

I've never heard it! Now that I've done my listen through I'm going to acquire all the missing ones. I'm really looking forward to hearing Get Up With It actually, I've heard good things.

It's more of a compilation than an album, and it sounds like it. Not much in the way of cohesion or even particularly good track sequencing, but the pieces in and of themselves are mostly really good.

True, but it wasn't that I decided to branch out and chose 2012 to do it. I decided to add to my 2012 list and couldn't really do it without taking some chances. Now that I'm off of that...who knows. I don't have a set plan.

Okay, I said that I didn't want to ever hear anymore post-hardcore, ever, and I guess this is somewhere on the post-hardcore spectrum, but I actually quite liked this. That's because you could definitely hear the effort they made to sound unique. Every track had something to make it stand out - the players obviously had incredible skill at their instruments, which is not a comment usually made about "Punk". Still, the vocals were lame and the band came off as seeming "Too Kool for Skool", but hey, that's a minor complaint compared to those I have of similar bands.

There's plenty good Post-Hardcore, At the Drive-In, Fugazi, NoMeansNo, I wouldn't give up yet.

It's marred by a couple of filler tracks unfortunately, but great nonetheless. Especially the bonus track Play Dead.... why that song was left off the album I'll never know.

Maybe you should check out Porcupine Tree...probably start with In Absentia or Fear of a Blank Planet. Then from there you might be able to gradually get into Radiohead and follow the more traditional DDD route.

I'm not entirely new to Radiohead; I like Street Spirit. I might try an album by them and maybe Porcupine Tree, too. I'm also making another attempt at Florence and The Machine (I like "Shake it Out"). I wouldn't expect anything traditional about the route I take, though.
