So just finished listening to the 7 classic Maiden albums (going back through my catalog of music). I certainly don't like them as much as I used to. Mainly the later albums (post Killers and prior to Seventh Son) are really atrocious lyrically outside of a handful of tracks. Yeah it's Maiden and they shouldn't matter much but holy fuck are some of them bad. For example they have probably 10 tracks that are what I like to call narrating the history textbook. Alexander the Great would be the quintessential track of this type. Every lyric in the song is just a roughly chronological description of shit Alexander the Great did without any added context or interest added to the lyrics (and with the music not having much to do with the lyrics). The music still ends up being good but the overall effect can be troublesome. Anyway my ratings (of course I still end up enjoying all of the albums) Great (9/10) 1. Iron Maiden 2. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Exceptional (8/10) 3. Powerslave 4. Piece of Mind 5. The Number of the Beast Good (7/10) 6. Killers 7. Somewhere in Time |

I find it an amusing thought that the so called greatest fusion album just gets an 8.6 out of 10. |

I'm not crazy about fusion anymore, and haven't really been listening to much jazz recently in general. This was my first time listening to it in quite a while and aside from the first track, the other songs will take a couple listens for me to really fall in love with them again. nah, 8.6 is good but an album that is labeled as "greatest" usually has something higher I'd imagine |

It's like rating a Beatles album 8.6 and saying, "This is the best rock album of all time." Not a bad rating by non-ahawkian systems, but seems rather lackluster for a GREATEST EVER kind of album. |

"In a Silent Way" is the best fusion album ever and anyone who disagrees is nuts. I give it 8.5/10. |

One World by John Martyn: This album is very easy to listen too. It has a warm glow shimmering in slick production that invites you to kick back and absorb its atmosphere. There is quick a lot of variety from track to track from smoky blues influenced songs, to funky grooves, and ethereal ballads. It also takes in a variety of influences including folk, bossa nova, jazz fusion, and dub. The vocals are incredible and Mr. Martyn shows quite the range changing styles in the midst of the song. I actually listened to Issues by Korn for the first time a few weeks ago, just for old times sake (it was the first album I ever bought and I listened to it a lot as a kid). There were a couple of songs that I liked, but the album had so much filler it was kind of absurd. Still, I was surprised that it wasn't awful. I'd say 6/10. |
