Prince seems to be one of the few artists we disagree on Mitch. Possibly my favourite artist of the 80s - and I love his ballads - The Beautiful Ones is undeniable. I agree on his production in general though. |

surprised you don't go for Prince too much, Mitch. He is the entire reason The-Dream exists, and I imagine Terius Nash himself would agree. "Do Me Baby," man, that is the slow jam. Though I will say that as much as Prince influenced The-Dream, he's an even bigger influence on D'angelo, so maybe it makes sense. D'angelo was originally going to include a cover of "Adore" on "Voodoo" but thought the album would be too cover-heavy (and oh god would I love to hear D'angelo cover "Adore"), so he said he wrote "Untitled" in an attempt to pay as much respect to Prince as possible. |

Just finished listening to all of Maiden's studio discography (save Virtual XI because I couldn't find it easily and it isn't worth the effort). Here is my album ranking Great (9/10) 1. Iron Maiden 2. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Exceptional (8/10) 3. Powerslave 4. Piece of Mind 5. The Number of the Beast Good (7/10) 6. Killers 7. Somewhere in Time 8. Dance of Death Pleasant (6/10) 9. Brave New World Mediocre (4/10) 10. A Matter of Life and Death 11. No Prayer for the Dying Weak (3/10) 12. Fear of the Dark 13. The Final Frontier Bad (2/10) 14. You're two favourites are my two favourites (though flipped). I really could have done without Sanctuary on Iron Maiden though. Fuckin' reissue. |

Really? I guess I just don't get Seventh Son. Not a bad album, but not on par with the rest of their previous output. |

I feel very similarly about Powerslave. What I like about SSoaSS is its thematic and musical cohesiveness coupled with some of their best ever songs. I think The Evil That Men Do is probably my favourite Iron Maiden song. |

I think The Evil That Men Do is probably my favourite Iron Maiden song. Agree on Sanctuary and agree very much on this. The thematic cohesiveness is actually quite impressive and the lyrics are actually pretty good (shockingly). I like how they do a good job letting the music tell a story and don't overdo any noodling (well a little on the title track). I'm then forced to conclude it's an aberration given the direction they took afterwards but man it's so enjoyable. Powerslave is interesting to me because the first two tracks are awesome and the last two tracks are awesome. Then there is the gooey middle which is just very blah. But the awesome is enough to get it higher up the ranks. |

Around the World in a Day is probably his best album. It has psychedelic tinges to it and has his best song, Raspberry Beret. |

Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music for Airports This is supposedly one of the first ambient records ever. I'm no expert in the history of ambient music, but this definitely seems like an album that's ahead of the game. 1/1 has some stunning melodies and textures. But largely, the album seems pretty boring on its surface. This, however, gives us an interesting opportunity. The minimalism in the musical aspects that we normally expect to give us excitement and expression allow us to examine the sounds for excitement in different areas. To me, this album is significant because it breaks down the music to its barest parts and reveals an interplay between two often ignored aspects of sound. There are commonly thought to be four aspects of sound: pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and timbre. I believe there is a fifth aspect which is largely unexplored, i.e. space. John Cage speaks about space a little bit, but I don't believe he ever connects space as a fifth aspect of sound. Through processes such as reverb and resonance, the room you are in can affect your perception of the sound just as much as the frequency of their vibrations affect your perception of the sound. Panning, or changes in the volumes of the left and right channels, can simulate changes in our perception of a sound in three-dimensional space. Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles both explored the concept of panning to an extreme degree in the late 60's. To me, this Eno album connects timbre with space, though I don't know if that was his intention. The bare minimalism of this album allowed me to explore this concept in my listening, but unfortunately, it seemed like Eno missed an opportunity to play with this aspect to a greater degree. I would love to hear this album in surround sound, but I doubt that's happening anytime soon. Eno's intention seems to be to create music which is both engaging and ignorable. I think he succeeds. 85/100. |

Mitch NZ wrote: No other artist has stuck out to me as strongly for their lacklustre songwriting as Prince, so I'm thinking something is up here, and it can't be just me. I think it might be. Although that said I do agree somewhat and think he's overrated as a songwriter. Just don't see PR as an example of this. |
