Yes, Yngtch is the most passionate Michael Kiske fan here along with me. :cool:

And Yngtch, I'm putting both Essen and Fulda bootlegs form Dime on download and I can thank you very much for seeding. Glad Kiske sounds great there too.

Did you mean he has rough moments because of those drum breaks or because he had vocal problems?

Oh, he handles the drum breaks just fine, it's Kiske who struggles there. Tobi just doesn't seem to pull of all the notes as clearly as usually does. That being said, he does some high notes that Kiske avoids, so I guess it goes both ways.

Yes, Tobi's voice has roughened, but he still gets the high notes. I think his voice only improved and he has rarely sounded this good live.
How does he do the Farewell ending and what notes does Kiske avoid and Tobi gets?

Oh, btw, I just downloaded lots of great Malmsteen bootlegs. At least two of them feature Boals on vocals, including a terrific one from Inspiration tour that I'm listening to right now.

There's also a stellar quality bootleg from 1985 with a GREAT-sounding Jeff Scott Soto behind the mike.

Hm, tough question. I guess Soto for the earliest material, but because of the very gruff voice he'd develop over time, I prefer Boals for most of the latter-day recordings. Still wouldn't have complained if Soto had continued as Yngwie's singer, it would've given his music more consistency, and it'd be even easier to recognize. I don't think Soto ever had the ability to nail the really high notes of songs like "Seventh Sign" or "Leonardo" without sounding overly strained and gruff, but if he'd stayed in the band, Malmsteen would've hopefully written songs that fit his voice, like he did with Joe Lynn Turner.

Too bad Soto wasted so much time with a third-rate Blackmore wannabe like Axel Rudi Pell. Urgh, talk about drop in quality...

Yeah, I think Yngwie's music would be much easier to recognize had he stayed with one singer. On the other hand, I'd have no complaints if Boals had sung all Malmsteen albums.

And I'm not that familiar with either Soto's music or Axel Rudi Pell, but for now I'll take your word. Will be back with opinions when I explore the material more closely!

Oh, I would've been happy with Boals as well, no doubt. I'm not always crazy about his tone when he's singing songs that weren't written for him, but I can't really fault his actual performances. Been listening to some of the bootlegs I downloaded from Dime, all of which I'm currently seeding(wink, wink), and Boals usually kicks ass. He shies away from the highest notes in "Dreaming", but I think that's more because he wasn't feeling top notch vocally, and didn't wanna ruin things by having his voice crack or something. He was going for a chesty approach, like the original, and unlike Ripper's versions, so it would've sounded so awesome had he gone all the way. It's from the '99 bootleg, btw.

Turner sounded GREAT, though. I also got an '88 bootleg where he does a strong "Dreaming", all notes intact. What a singer...

Hm, yes, Turner's style is definitely more chest-driven so Boals had to alter his approach in order to nail it...Ripper's version wasn't very good I must say... Boals has a great singing style, like you said, there are singers with better tone, but he always gets the job done, whether it's because of his glorious high notes or his great phrasing, it doesn't matter. He delivers.
And yes, Turner is a fantastic singer, his tone is just amazing, I could listen to him all day and never get tired.

So those shows, where are they from, just to now how to find them on Dime...?

Search for 'yngwie' on Dime, you'll find them.

And yeah, Turner's tone is beautiful when he's got the right type of songs. "Street of Dreams", for example. Boals is great when he gets to branch out a little, like on "Liar" from Seven the Hardway's album, or his first album with Royal Hunt. I found his singing on the Ring of Fire albums to get a little monotonous at times. Same phrasing, same over-reliance on the 'climatic' high notes you knew were coming all along.

And Yngtch, I've finished listening to the Essen bootleg...

Both Tobi and Michi were better vocally at Sao Paolo gig, but the quality here is better. Maybe in Essen they were tired because it was the first show since they were travelling from South America and then soon performing.
However, they still deliver! Michi avoided those 2 notes, but God damn was he good in Reach Out For The Light and The Tower, he nailed all the other notes! Loved his tone! Tobi was a bit rougher than usual on the highest notes and weaker on Farewell, but his voice is damn powerful! He blows every other singer out of the water when it comes to being resonant and powerful. Even Jorn Lande sounds small compared to him.

There is also Fulda gig which I'm gonna check out tomorrow! I checked the 2 suspicious notes and Kiske is singing them here and struggling, so that's why he let Tobi sing them night after in Essen.
