Don't stone me to death  but I didn't find Cologne PH and WLL that great. Yeah the usual runs and high notes were there, but everything he sang in between was... well, just that: something he sang in between.

It wasn't bad by any means, but IMO he's done better.

Admittedly the Purple Haze was merely ok (to Lambert standards), but the WWL was crazy with some truly impressive sustains.

Plus the performance itself was noteworthy. Not for whatever blink-and-you'll-miss-them antics w/ the bassist in the PH section (whatever), but for the WLL itself. I really don't know how the hell you maintain breath support doing those whip moves and backbends. And while there's no technical category here for "performing under extreme circumstances", I *do* think the manner in which he performs is often technically impressive. And no more so than in the Cologne WWL. Gaga can't sing and dance at the same time without panting. Neither can Pink. No other guy since Michael Jackson has attempted that sort of thing, and -frankly- Jackson wasn't a decent belter. And, looking at the technique from the other direction, I've never seen an opera singer remotely move like that and manage to sing. That why they sound good and move like puppets.

I find Cologne extremely impressive.

And that's a pretty high standard.

I actually only just now watched that performance, after your comment Hoppers. Usually I just listen.

Umh, he wasn't doing them _while_ singing. And honestly - there wasn't that much any heavy moving that would affect your breathing. He kept his head and shoulders steady when singing and rolled around here and there in between.

What I like about him is how easy his singing always sounds. It's surely a well established fact (at least here in DDD) that he's got a great technique. But I still don't see how this performance was any prove of it. Sorry. It just didn't do it for me. But you feel free to enjoy it.

I totally understand and agree with the point you make here Hoppers. But more important,I think this opera singer says it best:

"Of course, we all know that Adam can sing, but he REALLY sings. By that I mean he doesn’t fool around with falsetto trickery, sloppy diction and lazy breathing, which so many pop singers do. He sings with a full head voice into his falsetto range and he never lets go of a seamless legato line. Like many great opera singers, he not only sings a musical legato line, but also a lyrical one and extends the line beyond the phrasing. This is particularly obvious in a song like ‘Soaked’ which is technically difficult because it ranges through his passaggio (register break), but you’d never know, because his voice is incredibly well-trained and he negotiates his passaggios so well. And like all the great tenors of the opera world, he knows how to milk every phrase for emotional content. And talking of phrases; not only does he keep his phrasing interesting and fresh, he is clearly hiding a third lung in there somewhere, because he sings some marathon phrases, along with those mad coloratura type passages, which he always infuses with meaning and purpose, whilst gyrating, strutting and jumping his way through the concert, all with perfect support and breath control - I defy any opera singer to do that! Another hallmark of a great singer is the fact that his diction is so perfectly clear and seemingly effortless in every song. And his pitching is another amazing feat of genius, because even great opera singers sometimes hit a bum note, but I had to wait for a fraction of a note in TCB for that to happen and he corrected it instantly, which shows not only impeccable professionalism, but also how aware and how in touch with his instrument he is. On top of all that, Adam performs with incredible sophistication and finesse, something which is not always immediately obvious when watching the videos on You Tube. Yup, he wasn’t kidding when in his audition he said “I can seng”!"

I did? Wow....must be the **COUGH!** OK....I remember now and thanks J! I hope he is back in Germany next year with his sophomore album as well. Will you try to see him if he is? I know I can't wait to hear what he does next. Whether it's pop, rock or a combo of both, as long as it isn't as overproduced as FYE, I'll be happy.

Just a word about something that has been weighing on my mind for awhile.
While I can totally appreciate the fact the many people have come to the conclusion that if a singer comes off Idol, they can't be that good....I think we have ALL seen (and heard) exceptions.Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, David Cook and Daughtry being the first that come to mind. Now,Adam Lambert.
I remember the first time I saw The Beatles. It was on a variety TV Show, Ed Sullivan. Same with The Stones and The Doors. On that same show were guys juggling plates and a little mouse puppet named Topo Gigio.
We (the American kids) never gave a thought as to WHERE or HOW we were first exposed to their talent...only that we WERE and we were very grateful to Mr. Sullivan.
So, today, in America, on Thanksgiving Day...I want to say that I am thankful to American Idol for giving Lambert the exposure that allowed him to launch his career on an International stage. Thank You.

Scorned!

Even if he isn't singing at the exact moment he's doing the most taxing of the moves, he ain't panting afterwards. And he can sing mid-bend. Most singers I know would have their voices break doing half of that, and I'm including the opera guys I know personally. (My tone goes to shit after 5 steps, so I'm not a good example).

So yep. Cologne still does it for me.

I think a part of the problem here is that these Idol kids are rarely very good songwriters. Or at least they haven't got the chance to prove it before Idol. And usually don't get it after the show, either...

That makes it easier to make an assumption that "oh, he/she'll just sing whatever some producer tells him/her to, and thereby he/she is just a product and that's all".

And as sad as it is, it is true in a way - if we make an assumption that a "good singer" also performs good music. (Sidenote: Why, why on earth some recording label idiots decide to put the worst songs as singles?? :banghead: Happened with Adam, happened with Allison Iraheta...)

Too true, Whataya Want From Me was the only single I actually liked.
