I mean a show where the WHOLE BAND is on fire, not just Page or Plant.

I gotta say, Gonzaga University 68 blew my mind. But that was more all about Plant and Bonham.

Im expecting that answer from San as well, he did say japan 71 is his favorite tour

the 68 show needs some better quality though, but yeah, Bonzo was inhumanly consistent throughout his career though, and Plant was usually on fire back then.

That's definitely my favourite show by them.

Hmm, Gonzaga 68 is way too early and raw to be their best show. Not by a long shot.

There's no way I could pick a best show, but in terms of all around playing/singing (and irrespective of the sound quality of the recording), some of the best are:

1/26/1969 Boston Tea Party (this is like Gonzaga 68 on steroids)
4/26/1969 Winterland (Plant is on fire, and the setlist is pretty expanded for the time period)
9/19/1970 Madison Square Garden (good aud recording, Plant gets kind of tired toward the end, but this is an EPIC show)
9/28/1971 Osaka, Japan (this show is chock full of covers and the band is very playfull)
9/29/1971 Osaka (epic show, but Plant's voice could be better)
6/19/1972 Seattle (EPIC show. Terrible recording, but this might be the best ever. I was almost moved to tears the first time I heard it.)

think Ive heard that 72 show San, there's supposedly a story behind it of being recorded from somewhere far off or something ? wonder if its the same show....Ive also heard a bit of the winterland show, some of the Osaka, 28th one,

What do you mean "too raw" to be their best? That's what Zeppelin was always all about, the rawness. Especially Page and Bonham.

Granted, I haven't heard most of those shows you just listed, other than the 69 Tea Party (which has even more horrendous sound than Gonzaga), so I'm just going by what I've heard so far.

The setlist, the material and their interplay just wasn't that developed on that show. Sure, it has some insane Plant screams, but apart from that, there are many shows where all 4 are on more exciting form.

San, you mean 4/27/69, no?

Sounds like you might be referring to the 8/7/1971 show, which was (incorrectly) rumored to be recorded from outside the venue.

Nope, I mean 4/26, Winterland. 4/27/1969 is from the Fillmore West. Instrumentally, 4/27/1969 is just as good (I would say better), but Plant isn't nearly as good as on the 26th. Personally, I would listen to 4/27 any day, but I'll admit that Plant hit a few squeaks that night.

As far as your explanation of what I meant by raw, you pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I relistened to Texas Pop the other day for the first time in a long while, and I forgot how good that show was. Goddamn does Page rip! Man was he on fire that night.

If you want a nice concise, one hour show, you can't really do much better than stick that show on. It's on youtube in full as well.

May sound cliched, but what about the MSG shows from 73? Yes, the ones that made up the movie for TSRTS.
I think those shows were pretty explosive. I will never forget watching TSRTS with my dad, at about 10 years old, and being totally awed by it. But it's not the nostalgia factor, even now I still feel that Zep were at their best. Well almost. Plant is the only weak link, but even he sounded great at times (clearly he had lost a lot of his edge from '67-71).
However, Page was absolutely on fire. The extended soloing in Dazed & Confused is mind-blowing, by far the best version guitar-wise. Of course maybe it shouldn't be 28 fucking minutes, but still...
Plus, it has the ultimate SIBLY, guitar-wise.
Bonham and Jones are about on par too.

The MSG shows get unfairly panned by critics, but even then, they pale in comparison to shows from earlier in the year.

For starters:

6/3 LA (best show from the American 73 tour)
7/17 Seattle (there's a matrix of this show)

and not to mention several shows from the Euro spring tour crush pretty much any US show (Vienna and Hamburg come to mind)
