Don't like Elements, but Atheist's first couple are two of the best that tech-death has to offer. Haven't heard Jupiter yet, but if it's anywhere near the level of the first two, I'll probably like it.

I think you won't like it then. It's similar to Elements just without all of the jazzy stuff.

By the way, I wonder what everyone thinks of the Chinese blackened post-rock band, Dopamine. I think there's a whole lot of potential here. I don't think there's been such a drastic fusion of the two styles before. My major gripe is the styles feel so separate from each other and sound almost like two different bands. This song has some really fucking good moments, like the riffing that comes in at 1:18, the vocals are insanely good (reminiscent of Wolves in the Throne Room), and the solo that comes in near the end is pretty cool, though I can't help but feel like I've heard a similar but much better solo from another band. This is like the black metal version of Envy pretty much (without the cheesy spoken word vocals). Unfortunately Dopamine have broken up before the album has officially been released, and the album that's being passed around is a myspace rip. Someone let me know what they think of this and if they have any recs for something similar. (bloodred, I already know you'll hate it)

Eh, it's too unrefined.

Seems like you enjoy the more experimental Atheist Dips. For me it's

Unquestionable Presence
Piece of Time
Elements

Haven't heard Jupiter yet.

The new album's production is kind of hendrix.

Thanks, will dl right away. Also I need a complete reintroduction to metal. Recs for someone whose favs are: Gojira, Isis, Mastodon, Intronaut, Rwake, Cult of Luna, Mouth of the Architect, Converge. Basically I love me some sludgy riffs and atmosphere.

For sludgy stuff, have you listened to much Baroness or Kylesa? Kind of big names, but idk all that you've heard. As for non-sludge, Disillusion's Back to Times of Splendor is a great album, along with Edge of Sanity's Crimson. Both are progressive Death Metal. As for more Stoner stuff, Kyuss' Welcome to Sky Valley is great, and The Sword's new album is pretty good too. I wouldn't doubt if you've already heard all of these, I'm a little out of the loop lately also since I've mostly been exploring a bunch of Hip-Hop artists.

Love the song, love the album.

Have you checked out Triptykon's album or EP from this year?
If you like sludgy stuff you should give one of them a go, they're close enough.

Tiamat, Pelican, Callisto, Irepress, Angel Eyes, General Lee, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Melvins, Neuroisis

For anyone who really likes sludgy, yet atmospheric stuff, I highly recommended Angel Eyes. They're pretty fucking brutal, but still very atmospheric, kind of shoegazy.

Thanks guys. Of those mentioned I've listened to Baroness, Pelican, Melvins, Kyuss, and The Sword, but I for sure am going to check into the others.

I'm tougher than nails.
I can promise you that.
Step out of line
And you get bitch-slapped back.
And you can run
Your little mouth all day,
But the hand of God
Just smacked you back into yesterday

Atmospheric Sludge Metal

Neurosis may have created hipster metal, but Isis are the band that all the newcomers try to emulate. Dead in the Water certainly fall into that camp, but they're a little more bleak in their atmosphere, and actually have some pretty shocking dynamics, going from a minimalistic piano to a gargantuan explosion of doom riffage in milliseconds. Dead in the Water are less concerned with building up the tension and climaxes than pummeling you into the ground with their mammoth sound then letting you lie their and contemplate your life. The vocals don't necessarily rely on the harsh shouting akin to Isis, but also include Ihsahn influenced black metal howls to gutteral death metal growls. Their debut is basically the godchild of Oceanic and Ashes Against the Grain.
