Of course, lots of examples in movies. My favorite somewhat recent one was Gui Boratto's "Take My Breath Away", which I didn't even think that much of when I heard it on the album (I thought "No Turning Back" was the clear anthem). But then within the context of a sequence in The Great Beauty, it became this evocative revelation that I never knew it could be.

Another huge one is Family of the Year's "Hero" in Boyhood. Surely a corny piece of sentiment without Boyhood, but now it's interjected with a surplus of emotional and profound life-affriming baggage through the context of the film.

Imagine "Bound 2" on a different album. It wouldn't have the same earth-shattering effect.

If Bound 2 was in college dropout it would be Kanyes worst song, but being on Yeezus it's almost like he's parodying himself and it's fantastic

yeah it's like he's mocking the people who up until that point in the album were thinking "this is too much, can we have the old kanye back?" i think it's the most sarcastic song ever.

I rate the single version of "All Right Now" by Free as better than the LP version, which is not only much longer, but is an entirely different recording.

Guessing you object to the longer guitar solo on the LP version?

It's okay, but the single is not just an edit of the LP version. It's an entirely different version. Same thing with REBEL REBEL by Bowie, but I prefer the LP version that starts with the guitar riff intro. The single version below starts with a vocal intro, is about a minute shorter, and has background vocals that are not on the LP version, maybe it's because classic rock radio favors longer tracks and because of they are staples on the radio most people have become more familiar with those versions.

Interestingly the LP versions of both of those songs are more popular, whenever either song is played on the radio it's always the LP version, same whenever they're used in any other media such as movies or commercials, so for a long time I had no idea the single versions were different because they have been practically replaced by their LP counterparts in the cultural zeitgeist.

It happened with What's Going On too.

Personally I think it's a good thing because the LP versions are superior in all of those cases.

Think of a song you love, a personal 10/10.

If you heard the exact same version (studio, live, whatever) while listening to an unrelated album, such as a movie soundtrack, could your rating of the song change, perhaps in relation to the other album?

Sure. "Love, Reign O'er Me" is an incredible song on its own that gets a 10 from me, but listening to it in the context of Quadrophenia elevates it to an 11. In that context it sometimes feels like the pinnacle of human expression.

No, not if it's the exact same version.

Now, if the LP version is longer, or even a different recording, it's possible.

Huh. Same thing with "Endless Wire" and "We Got a Hit" from The Who's Endless Wire. Except those are the odd case where the single versions are actually longer than the album-proper versions. About twice as long for each of them.

I know a lot of people on this board make fun of you in chat but I don't care, this post is the only truth I know.
