Not really relevant to anything, but man..."That's The Way" is just a beautiful piece of music. Somethin' about the atmosphere they convey there is just enthralling. I can't explain it. When I was younger, I'd put that tune on through headphones and it was like....a euphoria.

It's a beaut... y'all will have another chance to salivate over it come Wednesday (I think).

"Dancing Days" is #40; it opened Side Two of "Houses of the Holy", and was released as B-side of "Over the Hills and Far Away" single. Like "Four Sticks" and "Friends", it was inspired by Indian music.

#39 is undoubtedly the most reviled song among Zepheads...

#39 is "All My Love", from their last studio album, "In Through the Out Door". For a large segment of Zephads, this is the nadir of Zeppelin's catalogue. What is wrong with it? Nothing per se; it is simply the most un-Zeppelin-like of all of their songs: the plodding rhythm, the synths, the lack of heavy guitar riffs, the relative overabundance of classical elements, the poppy modulation on the last chorus, the unusual sentimentality... the band had never been closer to a soft-rock /mainstream sound, and that is one of the biggest fears of the rebellious hormonal young man who prides himself on having badass taste in music, or who might have the image of LZ being badass dudes, ridiculous as that is.

The music was written and arranged by JPJ, and Plant wrote the lyrics. The song is dedicated to Plant's 5-year-old son Karac, who passed away while the band was on tour in 1977. JPJ handles all the synth work, and while he also provides the solo instead of Page, the latter does contribute tasty guitar fills throughout.
It is one of just two songs in LZ catalogue for which Page was not listed as a songwriter (the other being "South Bound Saurez", also driven by JPJ's keyboard work). Page and Bonham were not fans of "All My Love".

#38 on the countdown this weekend is "Thank You" from the band's second album. This is the first LZ song for which Plant wrote all the lyrics, and is dedicated to Plant's then-wife, Maureen Wilson. One can say the subject matter male-female relationship in Zeppelin's song catalogue varies widely between filth and wild lust on one hand, and the most gentle and romantic on the other. And, likewise, one can say with some confidence that "Thank You" is their finest representation at the latter extreme. In fact, JPJ's organ sounds like a wedding processional, at least that is one association it conjures. Page, for his part, plays a rare acoustic guitar solo.

"Living Loving Maid", also from the second album, comes at #37. It is about a groupie who has outgrown groupie age but kept stalking the band. Page disliked the song, but it has become a radio staple, thanks in part to it usually being paired with "Heartbreaker".
Strangely, it was the B-side to the "Whole Lotta Love" single.

That's the only way I heard it until a few years after its release. It's the flip side of "Whole Lotta Love" and was a hit single in its own right in March and April 1970. I guess you're not a singles man like me.

Well, let me put it this way, I find most choices for B-sides strange... likely because the choice was rather commercial than artistic.

Next up is #36, "Tangerine", from the largely-acoustic Side Two of "LZ III". It is based on a song written by Page in 1968 when he was with the Yardbirds, called "Knowing That I'm Losing You". The original recording with Keith Relf on vocals was not released on any album at the time. The song was reimagined by Page and Plant in 1970 while at Bron-yr-Aur, with new lyrics (though this is disputed by former members of Yardbirds) and additional instrumental breaks. Page is featured on pedal steel guitar throughout, and JPJ briefly in the beginning on mandolin.

No different than the choices for A sides.

Zep did not want ANY singles issued anywhere, but they did not control what happened outside of the UK in mosr cases. I don't think they ever had any singles in the UK.

The choice for the A-side has always been a song that will get you the biggest hit possible. The choice for B-side is an entirely different matter.

#35 on the countdown of our favorite songs by Captain Beyond is "Fool in the Rain". It is the highest-ranked song on this list from their last studio album, "In Through the Out Door", beating out "All My Love". JPJ and Plant were inspired to write a samba-themed song while watching the 1978 World Cup (where Brazil beat out Italy for 3rd place). The track ended up featuring one of the great drum shuffles by Bonzo (itself a variation on the Purdie shuffle) and a guitar solo from a guy named Jimmy Page. It was released as a single in early 1980 and just missed the Top 20.

I'm quite surprised this is ended up ranking so low and was acknowledged by only 5 out of 18 voters. Did people forget about its existence, or just don't care for it?

"Nobody's Fault But Mine", song #34, opens Side 2 of "Presence". It is loosely based on Blind Willie Johnson's song "It's Nobody's Fault But Mine", recorded in 1927. Per Wiki:
"'It's Nobody's Fault but Mine' tells of a spiritual struggle, with reading the Bible as the path to salvation, or, rather, the failure to read it leading to damnation. Johnson was blinded at age seven when his stepmother threw a caustic solution and his verses attribute his father, mother, and sister with teaching him how to read. The context of this song is strictly religious. Johnson's song is a melancholy expression of his spirit, as the blues style echoes the depths of his guilt and his struggle. An early review called the song 'violent, tortured and abysmal shouts and groans and his inspired guitar playing in a primitive and frightening Negro religious song'."

Zep's version was recorded in 1975, with Plant confined to a wheelchair as he was recovering from the car accident he suffered in Greece. The religious/spiritual theme of Johnson's lyrics were heavily changed/stripped. The band's producer, Rick Rubin, remarked: "A traditional blues, twisted through a trippy, psychedelic filter. They played with such precision, doing these odd arrangements that sound like loose jams but are really choreographed."

I realize "Achilles" is by far the most popular track on "Presence", but for me, this and "For Your Life" are the two songs that justify a record that otherwise tends towards mediocrity compared to their previous efforts.

Nah. It's not like their catalog is all that big, like the Stones or something. They released less than 100 total songs, right?

Probably the smallest catalog of any monstrous act.

We've just heard the opener to album "Houses of the Holy", "The Song Remains the Same", which ranked at #33. It is followed by "The Rain Song", and the pair would often be performed together during concerts, as well. It was originally written as an overture to "The Rain Song", was at first an instrumental titled as such, "The Overture". However, Plant wrote lyrics for it, which are based on his belief ("dream") that music is universal: "Every time I sing that, I just picture the fact that I've been round and round the world, and at the root of it all there's a common denominator for everybody." The piece features heavy guitar overdubs from Page, and a slightly-sped up vocal track from Plant (which possibly accounts for his voice sounding more high-pitched than usually).

I personally find the vocal performance a bit annoying and it slightly mars an otherwise excellent composition.
