So Moolaadé drops off, Spider Man enters the list. Potentially also Crash and Finding Neverland drop off. Anything else you consider to be essential changes, paul?

Well, let me make a case for "Saw" and "The Bourne Supremacy".

"Saw" doesn't get much critical acclaim but other than that, I don't see why it shouldn't be in the top 20 as it scores pretty high in all three of the criteria. It grossed 103.9 million, which was extraordinarily much for a sadistic horror film at the time and its popularity has greatly improved since, having started one of the most notorious horror franchises in film history and predestining James Wan for directorial stardom. It proved that there was a mainstream audience for torture porn, greatly influencing the horror scene since. It's also frequently cited as one of the greatest horror films of the decade, especially from sources specializing in horror. Lastly, it has a very good audience rating on RT and a high IMDb rating, showing that it gets way more acclaim from audiences than from the relatively small and homogenous demographic of mainstream film critics.

"The Bourne Supremacy" was the first Greengrass Bourne. Tim, I believe when we discussed the directors list you posted a link explaining how Greengrass' Bourne films greatly influenced action filmmaking in the 21st century. It's both acclaimed and popular and if it also has influence I don't see how it could be below films with such a mixed reception as "Crash", "Finding Neverland" and "Fahrenheit 9/11".

Generally, I feel you guys are placing too much importance on the TSPDT, RYM and Films101 lists. In recent years we didn't have much else to go on but as we get to earlier years we also need to consider lasting popularity and acclaim (especially TSPDT includes many year-end lists in its 21st century ranking) and also influence. Imo it really often helps to take a step back and just ask oneself whether in the general history of film it really makes a sense to place a certain film ahead of another. The matchup of "Spider-Man 2" against "Moolaadé" was just a particularly glaring example as the two films are not even close by the criteria and you still had them in the wrong order (imo). Another one could be "Shaun of the Dead" vs. "Tropical Malady" and "2046". SotD could be said to have revived the zombie comedy and placed it firmly in the mainstream, similarly to what "28 Days Later" did to the general zombie film two years earlier. Its lasting popularity is way bigger than what its box office gross seems to suggest. How is it below critically acclaimed arthouse films that appeal mainly to a very cinephile audience but barely changed the history of film at all?

I also clearly agree with Sherick's assertion that Spider-Man 2 should be above Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Also, to everybody who put 2046, Tropical Malady, Crash, Finding Neverland and Fahrenheit 9/11 ahead of Collateral, I'd really like to see a criteria matchup that proves that is correct. Because I don't see it. Generally, if a film was both very acclaimed and popular and continues to be so, it should probably make the top 20 of a year. This applies to Collateral moreso than to any of the of the other five films I mentioned.

So, Saw should be higher, at least above Vera Drake. Before Sunset probably was more apt where you guys had it. The Bourne Supremacy should probably sneak in. And to go to Asia for a second, please explain how Tropical Malady and 2046 beat House of Flying Daggers by the criteria. The rest doesn't include anything I couldn't live with.

Actually, I barely even look at RYM's list because of how all over the place they often are. I concede tspdt and films101 point though.
