Yes indeed - He played on the last Donald Fagen (Steely Dan) albums- Thats a feather in anyones cap and he made an album not long ago with Tommy Emmanuel.

He has the major hots for Gershwin and Django so expect those to figure in his show.

My discussions with George seemed to concur that the guy has superb chops/technique, but maybe lacks the creativity to be one of the greats.

A definite must to go and see though

Have you heard Birds Of Fire by Mahavishnu?

Absolutely.

Then I'm not really sure what else to recommend. I tried his solo album Extrapolation (1969), but it was more 'pure jazz' and didn't really hold my interest.

I definitely prefer his rockier stuff with Mahavishnu.

He's one of the few guitarists that I just cant wrap my head around. not my type, brilliant player,i can see that, but the odd songs ive tried(albeit a while back) left me confused, and not at all pleased.

This is possibly even more impressive than Joy, John really kills it, especially in the last 20 seconds or so...

ah yes, that guy. yeah the album with emmanuel is quite decent, though not as great as the other one he did with jim nicholls (another underrated and under recorded master)

Bought Petrucci's Rock Discipline. So far, so good.

It's a great lesson package, the perfect companion to Batio's first instructional video and PG's Intense Rock series. The examples aren't always the most musical ones, and since I prefer to practice with patterns you can use in actual songs, the vid's not for me in that sense. I still heartily recommend it, but it's far from the only good vid for working on chops.

I bought the book/cd, not the vid. But from reading the first few pages and doing the exercises, I understand what you're saying. They're not very musical, but since I'm just looking to improve my chops I don't mind that too much. I'll look into those other vids.
