Sydow should probably be ahead of Welles. Unique longevity, really strong and diverse body of work, highly acclaimed as both lead and supporting actor. I think Totò's reputation and influence within Italian cinema puts him ahead of Williams. |

Anatoliy Solonitsyn I vote for van Sydow to be ahead of Denzel as well (and I could even see him ahead of Tracy). As you said, he has very strong credentials and scores well in all aspects of the criteria. His body of work is simply unmatchable: seven decades of success in cinema. Inarguably one of the greatest European actors of all time . |

Against Denzel, Max probably takes body of work, loses in popularity and influence and they are about even in acclaim. Seems like close Denzel win. Hard to see Trintignant below Tati, only thing he clearly loses is influence, and body of work is big win for him. |

Yes, Denzel is after Poitier the most important Afro-American actor. He has a lot of acclaim, a decent body of work and popularity. But I think Von Sydow is in terms of non-English-speaking actors (though he has an impressive Hollywood career as well) in the same league as Mifune, Mastroianni, Gabin and Depardieu. He is the embodiment of thought-provoking Scandinavian cinema, largely thanks to his collaborations with Bergman and Troell. And how about Pelle the Conqueror? As I already mentioned, he, unlike Mifune and Mastroianni, has had an impressive Hollywood career as well: The Greatest Story Ever Told, Hawaii (not the most acclaimed film, but he received a Golden Globe nomination), The Exorcist, Three Days of the Condor, Conan the Barbarian, Dreamscape, Hannah and Her Sisters, Awakenings, Minority Report, Shutter Island, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Star Wars: The Force Awakens... He wins in body of work, and maybe even wins acclaim. I'd also say that Von Sydow is quite influential as one of the most successful Scandinavian actors in Hollywood, definitely the most successful male actor (Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman of course still beat him). |

Bergman and Garbo are both probably top ten actresses in history but that's question for another list. I am not opposed to Max being ahead of Denzel and actually considered it myself. |

I will post my top 25 for sake of comparasion: 1. Marlon Brando 2. Charles Chaplin 3. Robert De Niro 4. Humphrey Bogart 5. Daniel Day-Lewis 6. Gary Cooper 7. James Cagney 8. Michael Caine 9. Sean Connery 10. Richard Burton 11. Jean-Paul Belmondo 12. Fred Astaire 13. Montgomery Clift 14. James Dean 15. Alain Delon 16. Woody Allen 17. Jeff Bridges 18. Amitabh Bachchan 19. John Barrymore 20. Ronald Colman 21. Tom Cruise 22. Lon Chaney 23. Warren Beatty 24. Yul Brynner 25. Dirk Bogarde I still think it's right to have Brando at #1. Cinema has been sound medium for most of its history and Chaplin is primarily associated with silent acting. |

Ossie Davis 75. Vittorio De Sica 76. Rossano Brazzi I think Burton and Belmondo are underrated in your lists. Burton's acclaim at his peak was unrivaled, and I don't think that Belmondo should be below Delon: almost all French movie buffs agree that the triumvirate of French cinema actors is Gabin-Dépardieu-Belmondo. |

I too believe Brando should be at the top. It comes down to intangibles at this point, and Brando is recognized far more with the art of film acting than Chaplin, who is chiefly remembered for a particular comedic character thrown into various scenarios. Chaplin certainly revolutionized comedic film acting (though it is largely limited to the silent era), whereas Brando revolutionized film acting. If someone is ever told to imitate or parody a great actor, they are more likely than not going to do Brando as much as an OTT Shakespearean. |
