I thought Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver were great. I thought both of them were fine but the writing for their characters interfered with their acting to where they weren't fully in it I'm not sure that's true of Driver, I think we probably completely disagree on how Kylo Ren was done (I think it was great). It was true for Isaac but he's so great in every role he's in that I didn't really notice it. |

"Who talks first, do you talk first or do I talk first? I'll talk first." Fell in love with Poe Dameron right there. |

General thoughts. Good: As Clash said Kylo and Rey were perfect, and I'd throw Poe in there as well. It was refreshing to see a villain that didn't have his shit together, and it'll be interesting to see where the character goes in the next two movies. It was a lot of fun and Han was perfect too. I'm so glad they saved Luke until the very end, that last scene was absolutely perfect and people probably wouldn't have given a shit about the new characters if all of the old crew was back. I'm not saying much on the good part because most of the things that I didn't dislike I thought were great. Bad: Where the fuck did that map come from? Nobody knows where Luke is but there's a map leading directly to him? Agreed on the lightsaber fights at the end, but even before the fight Rey's awakening to the force was done poorly and makes no sense. I get that if she was trying to keep Ren out of her head she could do that with the force without being trained. But how the fuck would she even know to use the Jedi mind trick if she had only been aware the Jedi weren't myths for like 6-8 hours and had never spoken to an actual Jedi? Han being killed was the dumbest shit, but not for story reasons, just because people fucking love Han Solo and if this whole thing is about going back to the original trilogy and giving fans the Star Wars they loved, then that was a stupid fucking call. And that whole storyline was incredibly obvious. It feels like a lot of the shit JJ came up with would have been the same stuff 5 nerds in a basement would have come up with. And again agreed with Clash, how the fuck can they not let us see Luke and Han together again? Lastly, it was stupid to destroy the Starkiller base. I didn't have a problem with the droid/search thing echoing A New Hope, but coming back full circle felt lazy. "There's always a way to blow it up." Sure but if it's so much more powerful than the Death Star then destroying it in largely the same fashion and at the end of the first movie agin is a let down. The First Order is supposed to be worse than the Empire, but had more damage done to it in the first film and both sub-villains are much less competent than the Empire's villains. I guess because their ship was a lot bigger, because Snoke is mysterious and scary and big, and because Kylo is a loose canon, we're supposed to be more impressed by the First Order. I wasn't. It felt like the First Order was the JV squad to the Empire's varsity, even if it wasn't written that way. It seems like Snoke is most likely Plagueis but I'm not sure I have a problem with that. It would be in tune with the Lucas' keeping it in the family idea, even though he's not family to anyone. I would have a problem if Rey turns out to be Luke's daughter or some shit. But idk how Rey gets so good at the force so quick if she's not in Anakin's bloodline. Hopefully there's an answer to that and it's not just shitty writing. At the end of the day I'm just pumped to see Star Wars movies that I don't now the endings to for the first time since I was 7. |

just watched Kumiko the Treasure Hunter. It is about a Buster Keaton hilarious Japanese girl who is convinced that Fargo is a true story and she can find the buried treasure in it in actual Minnesota. This movie is very beloved to me. One of the very best I've seen from 2014. |

Also an interesting film about communication barriers and faith. And, on rewatch I think Clash may be right that Ex Machina is film of the year. Or at least it is bumped up a lot for me now. |

In the Heart of the Sea 8.3/10 Definitely exceeded my expectations. I think it's a shame it's done so poorly. |

The Missing - 7/10 An unusual Western in that the supernatural appears to be very real. Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones work well together. The film is probably more of a 6/10, really, but I always give Westerns an extra star. |
