The Roadshow debuted in Silver Spring. I'm not sure if that's different from the other 70mm screenings. |

Cripes, I'm so glad I did it. One of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had in a movie theater. I went to the Saturday matinee and it was sold out, so I saw Star Wars again (in 3D that time, don't bother, 2D is the way to go). Then I bought a ticket for the Sunday matinee while I was there. An overture, a "free" booklet (fourteen pages with a Kurt Russell centerfold, supposedly other showings got a Samuel L. Jackson or Walter Goggins centerfold), and an intermission. My description of the film would be a Western interpretation of a Reservoir Dogs/John Carpenter's The Thing/Agatha Christie parlor room murder mystery mash-up. It's as bonkers and as riveting as it sounds. |

McCabe and Mrs. Miller - 7/10 Robert Altman makes weird films. Kind of beautifully mesmerizing, but weird. I really like how this was shot. It has a hazy kind of cinematography with a gorgeous palate. Made it look like a rich and sumptuous painting at times. Now I can scratch another one of Wild West Magazine's 100 Greatest Westerns off the list. It was number twenty-four. |

The Hateful Eight (Tarantino, 2015) I've probably underestimated the ole Tarantiner the past few films, but I have to hand it to him here, a terrific whodunnit stage play that demands to be seen in the format he intended it for. It's not just the frame size you're paying for, but when celluloid is projected through light, that subtle, flickering glow gives this near single location tale more weight and makes the experience more absorbing. Those extra tracks on the film strip allow the sound to really stand out, and this is the first time I've really been seduced by the sound design in one of his films (oh that blizzard!). All of Tarantino's trademark qualities are still present, and I'd even say things feel far more focused this time around, as the dialogue (the strongest thing here) just feels sharper and more animated. Even tho I think his narrative sense is too winky and overrated, this one is paced like a breeze for its 3 hour allotment. Bonogirl and her boyfriend were with me and thought the first part was slow, but I thought it moved pretty damn swiftly. Maybe I just watch too many Antonioni and Tsai films, so my perception of slow is 'like molasses'. The cast is uniformly great, and Walton Goggins is given a free pass to go to town with his character, and he doesn't disappoint as it's probably the best work of his underrated career. Be sure to keep your politics and morals at the door tho, all of these characters are kind of terrible people and once you accept that, accusations of this film being misogynist, racist or even homophobic are a bit moot. Then it just becomes a game of who you find most entertaining for whose side you're on. Yeah it's an ugly, bloody film, but don't let that stop you from having a good time, cuz you will. I definitely have the first screening giddies, as I had to wait all night missing out on my original showing at 730 due to a sold out theater, only to show up at 1130 at night on a monday to a nearly sold out show! But I guess it makes sense now since apparently the 70 mm roadshow is the only way to see this in the whole state of Arizona, for now at least. I still would like to see it a second time again since a lot of the film's charms is predicated upon a lot of spoilery stuff. |

Joy 7.7/10 Certainly not up to the high standard in which I hold a David O. Russell film. The plot, most of the characters, and even the film making aren't very strong compared to his previous films but I still found the acting (particularly Lawrence and Rossellini) to be really great. Some really good musical moments too. |

The Hateful Eight Due to popular demand the 3-day run of 70mm prints in Birmingham has been extended so I got to see it! (And maybe tomorrow I'll see it again). Most important things first: this 70mm film is beautiful and takes full advantage of the types of light that look best on celluloid. Sun shining through windows and into some tobacco smoke has never looked so inviting. It will convert any person bandying about that "celluloid over digital people are just being hipsters" line in an instant. See it the way it was meant to be seen. 70mm, overture, intermission. If the film is not morally justifiable, it is at least certainly superficially justifiable. A film like this getting repeat sold out shows on weekdays (happening here as well as in Arizona apparently) has the power to put pressure on certain companies to keep filmmakers in mind. Interlude: Is this the best Samuel L Jackson performance? Is this the best Jennifer Jason Leigh performance? Maybe. And neither of those is a small fry. I am legitimately shocked that this has received poorer reviews than both Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained. Though I guess I shouldn't be. Chalk it up to the fact that most film critics are the types of weak-stomached liberals who take NPR way too seriously, I guess. As much as those former two films try to be provocative, this is the only one which I think is really pushing boundaries and trying to legitimately shock the moral sensibilities of any audience imaginable. Far from the empty exercise is nihilism that it is described as, this is High Decadent trash at its most extravagant; truly engaged and brilliant decadence which the western world rarely allows into the public sphere. For more self-consciously depraved excellence at anywhere approaching this level of popular appeal you have to go back to the fin-de-sicle romantics of British decay like Oscar Wilde. I think my one disagreement with wanta then would be on the moral point--it is exactly your moral and political integrity which you should strive to keep intact while watching the film, to see just how brilliant it is at needling you ruthlessly, forcing you to try to conjure up some kind of coherent response. Final verdict: I think it's still not as amazing as Pulp Fiction on balance. But it is the only other Tarantino film I've seen--since however too young I was when that film and its kaleidoscope Miserlou bombasted into my consciousness and scrambled my life with the magic of cinema forever--which has made me feel like I was once again, under the influence of ol QT, risking what Terence McKenna calls "death by astonishment." It doesn't quite have the same level of isolated gorgeously choreographed and scored multicolored setpieces as the Kill Bill films, but it holds together as one huge consistently watchable spectacle a lot better, I think. And it's his most seriously written script ever, with the possibly exception of Jackie Brown, which was an adaptation and so loses some points for not having as much directorial conviction behind it. I think I'm tentatively placing this one at number two in his filmography for now. Which means it's sensational. Cinema is trash. All cinema that isn't is in an exception proving the rule category. The Hateful Eight is pure cinema. |

Man, I love it when we all agree on a movie. I rank The Hateful Eight just under Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill films in his magnificent ouvre. They all receive a 10/10 from me. Which means Quentin Tarantino has either tied or surpassed Steven Spielberg for most 10/10 films from me, depending on if you count Kill Bill as one movie or two. |
