I think my one disagreement with wanta then would be on the moral point--it is exactly your moral and political integrity which you should strive to keep intact while watching the film, to see just how brilliant it is at needling you ruthlessly, forcing you to try to conjure up some kind of coherent response.

Yeah I even felt sketchy writing that since my only reason was that I was tired of all the negative criticisms against its politics. I suppose it's a film tailor built for not everyone to like, even the most cinephilic cinephiles, and maintaining who you are as a person will reveal a lot to you. That being said, I wish people who do bring their political baggage in do so with a bit of wiggle room. It's actually nice to sit and watch The Hateful Eight and at some point just say fuck it, I just want to enjoy it in cinema terms.

I think you're right about this being his most morally provocative film, the ending shot is basically QT throwing bolts of lightning down your throat while other contemporaries are still barely dipping their toes when it comes to dishing out this kind of material. Tho I think a lot of the provocative blow is softened since QT makes all of these characters baddies so he's zeroing in on the inherent drama instead. It would be much different if JJL was playing a pregnant do-gooder with the stuff happening to her, but instead everything inflicted on her becomes exclamation points of script rhythm and dramatic fervor. Speaking of which, she seems to be an object of obsession in the film world for some reason, any films you can recommend that star her? I think I just kinda know her casually.

This too for me is high tier Tarantino, I'd also rank it about second if only because his 90's work has more cultural baggage. I've been fiending to watch the Kill Bills tho, it's been waaay too long. I almost purchased that Tarantino boxset the other day since I had so much fun with TH8.

Actually, I think I'm going to bump E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial up to a 10/10.

Miami Blues as well.

Jennifer Jason Leigh is a victim of having great performances in films that at best are usually just very good. This is arguably her first great performance in a film that is itself great as a whole. But wanta whenever you get into the phase of cinephilia where you start going by actress/actor filmographies rather than director or critical hype, Jennifer Jason Leigh will be a good one to start with.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner - 8/10

I didn't realize until moments ago that this was Spencer Tracey's last film. What a performance to go out on. Some crazily prescient lines in this. So striking that I don't want to spoil them. I can practically guarantee that one of them will make you say, "Holy shit," or something similar.

That is a phase I'd be excited to get into. My whole cinephilia has been centered on directors, but I would like to view films just in terms of actors. I know that most of the public kinda thinks this way since "Who's in it?" is asked way more than "Who directed it?", but it seems more gratifying coming into that world from a wealth of knowledge especially from how the auteur theory works.

I think it would be an interesting exercise to think of actors who consistently add their own flavor to the movies they act in; actors-as-auteurs. It seems easier during the golden age star system, so I'm rather interested in ones today. I actually think that's the basis of why Armond White likes Adam Sandler films, since he kinda continues the Harold Lloyd tradition of the comic actor is king when making films.

Marlene Dietrich is a good way to get started on actors. Because it's an initiation into the star system but you also have a lot of overlap with old school directorial auterism with all that Von Sternberg. But I think Barbara Stanwyck after that for initiation into pure star system understanding. Probably the actress who was able to be most versatile within the rigid star system and was not married to any one particular director, though she has her phases.

After the star system it's weird and you don't really have stars so much as celebrities, which is a little different. You have some celebrities who try to recreate the star style without star infrastructure, like George Clooney or Jack Nicholson, and then you have people like Jennifer Jason Leigh and Daniel Day Lewis who try to get stage-actor style actor-as-actor recognition within cinema form, and then you have a lot of people who try to have it both ways like Brando. This diversity of approach is very interesting, and going through an actor's filmography will push at the limits of what you think it even means for a particular person to be an "author" of a film and I think is the clearest way to get a sense of how deeply collaborative film is as a medium.

You know, I think I have to put The Hateful Eight just ahead of Pulp Fiction. Maybe because recentism, but also because Western.

Nightcrawler - 9/10

Cinematography, music, script, acting, everything comes together to create a near-masterpiece. Wish I'd seen it in a theater. And what a killer final line.

I was disappointed with this. But Clash, did you see Prisoners, or Enemy? I think Gyllenhaal's films with Denis Villeneuve would appeal to you a lot. Prisoners shows itself to be more complex the more I watch it, which is much needed in thrillers these days.

I would also add eXistenZ, Short Cuts, and The Hudsucker Proxy. Though I admit she might not star in all of them.

 , yeah. These are all 10/10 films we're talking about, so it's really hair-splitting ranking them. I reserve the right to change my mind, but for now, the Westerness of The Hateful Eight puts it a split hair above Pulp Fiction.

I have seen Prisoners. I give it a 7/10. Gyllenhaal impresses me more and more with every film I see him in (I think he's literally the only actor I can say that about), and Prisoners was no exception.

Can't believe he didn't get an Oscar nom for Nightcrawler
