What nominee this year will I never get to this Oscar season? I always miss one a year, usually for fear of boredom for these unappetizing prospects. 2014 it was Philomena, last year it was The Imitation Game. This year, my money's on Brooklyn, which nobody in their right mind would want to see.

Philomena is surprisingly really good. At least that's what I think. I was expecting a regular sentimental easy-watching film that I would forget about a week later but actually it was very moving and doesn't give any easy answers and or feels contrived like most films of its kind, it's even quite frustrating (but in a good way). It very rarely (only once) falls into obvious tear-wrenching mode, most of it is subdued or light-hearted, making the subject matter all the more powerful. It really stuck with me.

Carol was so perfect I kept getting distracted by going into my mind trying to explain to myself how it could be so perfect that I couldn't keep up with its constant perfection delivery system. New favorite film of 2015. It makes me regret letting every1 know about my Rooney Mara crush because now nobody will believe me when I say This Is The Film, but: This Is The Film. The best Todd Haynes film. Maybe THE great love film that I know of. Not at all some craven Oscar bait "lesbian film." Could write about this for hours, but I have to get packing today..

I love that I am just unashamedly loving all of the films it's expected I would love this year. The key is to love them on your own terms.

Movie is weak. It deserved zero nominations.

Not even acting though? Actress who played Coretta killed it

damn things just keep getting topped for you. Looking forward to Carol. Is it something that normal folk will find interesting? Normal folk as in does it have enough obvious drama to keep them in their chairs for the duration of the film. I don't know if my gf can pick up on aesthetics yet, and the only Haynes films I know are Safe and Far From Heaven, the latter of which seems like Carol's closest cousin.

The miracle of the film is that it is fully Haynes at his smartest and deepest and most precise, while also being totally accessible to anyone.

Except nasty nasty conservatives.

Of course. I always kinda assumed everyone liked it. It's one of my personal veryveryfunnies. I'm always very cyinical when it comes to comedies and generally don't watch or like them but man, there are some great ones out there. It's been a while since I saw it, but this is definitely one of them.

Oh man, how good was Carol, right? Too good. Had high expectations from it since I love Haynes. Still prefer Safe, I think, but for what Carol was trying to be and what I expected from it, the film was absolutely goddamn flawless. So pretty, so moving, so well acted, so well staged. Image

Interesting how you mention loving all the films you expected to love. That's also kinda the way I've been feeling. And it's not only about the ones I love, but the other ones as well. So many I've liked the exact amount I expected to or disliked the amount I expected to but went anyway (for whatever reason).

Before the Christmas holidays I went to Dublin for two days and watched two films. First was Carol, a film that I found excellent and immediately fell in love with and shot its way into my favourite films of without breaking a sweat. But then, the next day I went back to the Irish Film Institute to watch Sunset Song. And man, I had not expected to like a film quite as much as Mad Max: Fury Road this year, but wow, absolutely goddamn WOW. Please guys, go see this movie. And if it's not out yet where you're at, start by watching other movies by Terence FUCKING Davies already. Geez.

Which it is. But it's very different, too. I think Carol is pretty accessible. I was expecting another Sirk-drenched melodrama like Far From Heaven, but that movie was also a lot about nostalgia for a film form and style from a particular era. Carol is also heavily nostalgic for that era, but more for life itself than a style of films from it. FFH gives me more cinephile pleasure, whereas Carol felt way more human. Still a gorgeous piece of cinema, the one doesn't exclude the other - don't get me wrong there.

It's more of a sling to be honest.

Some of the ideas were solid in that movie. At time the execution worked well. And then the jump cuts kept getting more abrupt and I was able to follow the plot only with much concentration and even then I wasn't really sure why things were happening except that they were.
