Sheesh, not too long ago you were thinking Ex Machina might be the #1 film of the year.

Nah, because that's not precisely the same chess-piece suspense Tarantino was going for. He wants to make sure you know that nobody saw her see it. If WE see her see it, there's the potential that someone else in the film saw her see it. And that's a different suspense than Tarantino wanted.

Not only that, but cutting to another plot element, particularly one of such weighty importance and rife with such pregnant anticipation, would dramatically dilute the crystaline impact of the lethal confrontation between Sandy Smithers and Marquis Warren. I'm sure QT wanted the audience as focused on that confrontation as John Ruth, Chris Mannix and OB were. It makes it more believable that no one else saw the poisoning, because even we ourselves in the audience didn't see it, and it gives that confrontation the laser-like focus it deserves.

Hm. I see your points. Well, I'll know what to make of it all after a next viewing.

near the beginning of the year I said I would be very happy if I see even one film this year that I like more. Since 2014 was kind of a disappointment. 2015 has just been that that great. And this isn't even including Knight of Cups, which is probably about #3.

Good points both.

The Revenant was impressive in an abstract kind of way. The whole scale of it all and the production of it just seems so daunting. I did have a hard time immersing myself into the film. My mind was allowed to wander too much. I just find Leo to be a very distracting actor - not totally his fault, but he's still culpable here. I was all-in on the non Leo parts coincidentally. The cinematography was superb, but that pretty much goes without saying. Lubezki's too good. The spiritual/mythic elements worked pretty well, I think. Trees and breathing equals immortality? I'm in. I wanted to like this more than I think I do, though. Swap out Leo for someone less mythically famous and I'd be good to go.

Sounds more like not coincidentally.

Welp, Ex Machina did not get a Best Picture nom, which I think is a grave injustice, but it did get a Best Original Screenplay nom, which makes me feel much better. It also landed a Best Visual Effects nomination.

Not seen Ex Machina yet but man the nominations are horrible this year. Or is it just me?

Not seen Joy yet so I can't really comment, but I have crazy high expectations since it's Russell and he has done nothing but deliver movies that were at the very least very good. And the performances he's got out of Jennifer Lawrence in the past are the best she's given afaik, so I don't share your comments on Joy there.

The Danish Girl and Steve Jobs can gtfo tho. God, do I really have to see the two most boring looking movies of the year? fuck

Does anybody think The Martian was one of the best movies of the year? I love Matt Damon and thought it was good but like 7/10 good. The Avengers was a better movie
