Source Code and Looper are two of the best mainstream sci-fi films of the last ten years. Up there with District 9, imo.

Completely forgot about Rise of the Planet of the Apes. That film was great.

Indeedsies.

I just find Source Code and Looper well above Abram's work really, whose films have never rose above standard popcorn affair. I like how Johnson and Jones take fairly simple concepts, which some may even call gimmicks, and develop them thoroughly. I see a lot of parallels between what they're doing and the classic Hollywood way of storytelling (there's no coincidence that you see traces of North by Northwest in Source Code and noir-like rhythm in Johnson's dialogue). I also feel that they aren't so bogged down by appealing to the teenage market like I feel Abrams still feels cuffed to, making their films much more formal and sophisticated.

Star Trek and Super 8 takes me on a ride, it tells me a story, I'm entertained, I leave the theater, take a piss and forget I even saw it hours later. Source and Looper are well conceived entities that operate on me intellectually and don't just pander to my emotions

I feel the exact opposite of this. Can't speak for Looper cause I haven't seen it yet but I found Source Code to contain much more cringe-worthy dialogue in every single scene than either Star Trek (!) or Super 8 had in the entire movie.
Also, can you explain a little more the NxNW and film noir comparison?

Has anyone here seen Killer Joe yet? I just came back from the movies with incredibly mixed feelings. It's simultaneously a pretty cool trashy movie kinda like the brutal side of Russ Meyers doing a noirish, violent and freaky Texas tale and a messy piece of garbage with over-the-top stupid characters and terrible acting from that bitch Emile Hirsch. At this point I still like the movie (mainly because of Matt McC) and I admire Friedkin for making something like this, but it's definitely not great.

Krzysztof Kieslowski - White

Installment number two in the post-my-unfiltered-stream-of-thoughts-after-viewing-to-keep-Dreww-from-killing-me exhibit:

The difference between emasculation and power is circumstance. Is there more to the film? It is heartwarming and amusing, and of course frequently visually arresting, but it seemed less unified than Blue. I will need to see Red to be sure of how the three films hang together, but looking at just Blue and White, I do not see where the connections lie. Thus I am at a loss regarding the occurrence in White of motifs (e.g. the music) that are internal (thematically) to Blue. (It is probable that there are features of the two films that go the other way, but which I did not recognize.) An entertaining film, but nothing more.

This. And frankly just less detailed in its effects and less rigorous in its application of them.

Basically little "moves" a movie makes to provoke a response. Great movies have tons of these. Little defamiliarizing strategies that make something stand out or taking on a richer, more precise meaning. Think the painful length and savage disinterest of this shot in Through a Glass Darkly:

That's an "effect" a movie possesses.

Krzysztof Kieslowski - Red

I wrote down some thoughts on this film too but they are so trivializing to the film that all I can really say is that this is one of those films that I cannot immediate reconcile with my existence (as opposed to even a great film like Blue). Great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great.

Watched some of that today because of your review, and will probably watch more later. All I can say is, oh my goodness, Kieslowski is a very funny man. That ballet shot followed by that water bottle shot. Ha ha, oh Kryz.

The Matrix - 9/10

Holy fuck this movie was a lot more dense with interesting ideas than I remembered. Of course pretty much none of the concepts and references that were part of the movie would have been recognized by me when I was 14, which was the last time I had seen it. Studying Philosophy and a little bit of history has paid off at least a little bit. I'm probably going to have to go over the sequels in the future because I'm pretty confident that I didn't like them when I was younger because I was too stupid to realize the significance behind the plot and just cared about the action aspects of the movies.
