A good date movie. And since I was actually on a date that makes it okay.

Oh, sorry to interrupt. Don't mind me. Go on with with your little discussion. Besides it was just a movie date. That's not exactly a real date, is it?

Actually I take back what I said, when I say I see nothing wrong with shocking imagery I mean portrayals of shocking imagery, as in fictional.

I really despise those websites that use real images of mutilated bodies of both people and animals to elicit a shock. I like being challenged and uneased, but not like that. It cheapens real tragedies for "lulz" and it's sickening. And that's coming from someone with a real taste for gallows humor.

I remember finding this picture on 4gifs that was a real picture of a woman whose head was crushed by a truck wheel, it was horrific, and there were comments like "lol chick should shave her armpits".

I get easily pissed off by the internet as it is but it's stuff like that which makes me such a bitter misanthropist.

just saw it, pretty much what I expected tho sucks cuz I was kinda desensitized to all the shocks going in. Though saying that even if I knew completely nothing about the film, I still don't think the gore works entirely. It's not just showing me shit, but how good you are at sequencing on what you're showing me so you can sieze my disbelief in it. Irreversible actually disturbed me because it was better at doing that and actually was more relentless than this. Also I don't remember ever chuckling in disbelief at irreversible (chuckling for me isn't a defense mechanism but rather insufficient filmmaking). Not only that I actually knew all the shit beforehand watching Irreversible and I was still disturbed. Though if this was going for comedy-shock (which at times I think it was), it kinda did work, but mostly because of that one Leonidas looking motherfucker who had some hilarious dialog.

Also investigation should be closed, the single subject edits were obvious and also took away from disturbing me.

This film has more than just shock value going for it. It's a very well directed, written, and acted movie. Not at all like the typical exploitation film. Don't take my word for it though - watch it. Even the trailer should be enough to show people that this isn't some half-assed shocker film.

eek fuck that no way, not even within its subgenre, as it basically uses the same cliche filmic techniques to try to heighten the shocks (which the idea on paper was more disturbing than its execution here). Written wise, you've gotta be kidding me man. That dialog was terrible and you could predict the last 15 minutes or so from miles away. I give it about a 3 for its comedic parts and its unintentional humor which was due to its bad writing. The acting was whatever too. Not very hard to act in this kind of film.

I'd see it for the reasons I went into it with, which actually is socially relevant in my social circles cuz between this semester, A Serbian film has been brought up at least once a week. And the second reason was if its gore aspects were done in ways that were unique to its subgenre to make it more affecting, but alas I don't think it even did that well. I think the root of the cause is because if you show too much and you keep doing it within the course of the film, it loses its power and the shock goal you're trying to give the viewer. I still think you can show some shit and even gain credibility in doing so if it's done right, but in Serbian that's not the case and if you're looking for truly affecting pulp, even within today's "seen everything under the sun" society, Haneke and Noe are your dudes.

I don't think the writing was THAT bad, but it wasn't original at all. there wasn't anything innovating or fresh with the direction but again, I don't think it was awful either. I thought it would be cheapened by a large margin with the whole pornstar actor being the protangonist, but the acting was fine.

Imo the film very much set you up and got you into the headspace necessary for all the 'shocks,' which made it less shocking and as a result you sorta dug in deeper. Reminded me of Glamorama by Ellis in ways

Your description of the badness actually kind of make me want to see it, wanta. Why are people bringing up A Serbian Film around you?

Interesting that you bring up Bret Easton Ellis, bd, because I think snuff films are mentioned in two of his earlier books. I know there's a very prominent scene with one in Less Than Zero, but I don't know what the other one is.

Yeah I think I should apologize to Curiosity for going overboard. I still doubt I will see the film and I have very deep issues with the use of children in films like this, but I took it out on him and people who are interested in the film more than the film itself, for which I apologize (not for my stance, but for the extent).

Yeah, Solondz films aren't my thing.

I like my fair share of shocking movies though. I'm a fan of Julien-Donkey Boy and Gummo.

I feel true shock has zero to do with gore and sex, it's putting your head in a space it doesn't want to go, and that can be through many different ways in a plethora of contexts... using kids in films like that does worry me a bit too, but meh I guess I'm assuming parental consent and that everything has been handled with necessary care.
