Hiroshi Teshigahara - Woman in the Dunes

Amazing. The soundtrack, the shots of flowing sand, the development of the entomologist, beauty of the woman's life—all of it was handled beautifully and with great artistry. Already among my favorite films.

Sergei Eisenstein - Ivan the Terrible, pt. 1

Maybe not the best place to start with Eisenstein? I could not manage to care about the plot whatsoever. (I have to reconsider my belief that plot is the least important element of narrative art—that belief may just amount to the belief that the traditional virtues of plot are the least important virtues.) On the plus side, that freed me up to focus on the cinematography, which was often beautiful (the shadow shots, the close-ups). But it didn't add up to anything complete and satisfying.

Definitely not, no. I like it a lot but it is confusing as hell. Definitely watch the second part, tho. Made the entire thing very awesome for me. But you should watch Strike and Potemkin for sure. Those movies are very intense.

Man of Steel is not bad at all. Immensely entertaining and even though it has a lot of silly moments, the film doesn't seem to lose focus for a second. Zack Snyder's best, easy. Haven't seen Sucker Punch or that owl movie tho.

Blade Runner: In my quest to expand my cinematic horizons, I decided to begin with this film. I'm only about half way through but so far I'm a bit torn. On the one hand the cinematography is outstanding. The world is so rich with its asian influences, its hazy neon illuminated streets, its drizzle soaked backroads. I really just enjoying being in this world. On the other hand the dialog is just horrible. I almost feel like it would work better at a silent movie with just the soundtrack because I cannot swallow any of the lines delivered.

If you are watching the original version, with the voiceover, stop and seek out the director's or final cut.

well here's an opinion on a film that didn't really need to be said, but Lone Ranger is absolute shite. And the world did not change one iota after this post.

Depp is like a weird bizarro Downey. He delivers great performances in under-the-radar flicks for years, then finally because a star and performs solely in shit.

Yeah, in complete agreeance with c. It happens too often, Pete.

What's your opinion on Director's Cut versus Final Cut?

Sergei Eisenstein - Ivan the Terrible, pt. 2

Much better than the first (red banquet :surprised:), but still ultimately not quite satisfying. I just can't bring myself to recognize anything in the story (the plot) as having a legitimate claim on my attention, however gorgeous the cinematography.
