LED TVs still use an LCD panel. It's just backlit with LEDs instead of fluorescent lamps. It's a better choice for backlighting all-around, as you get less light bleed around the edges, better blacks, wider gamut of colors if it's RGB-LED backlit. And then other good points that aren't related to picture quality like lower power consumption, thinner displays, lighter displays, etc.
